UK Technical Director – Building Services

Lead the Future of Sustainable Building Design

We are looking to appoint a UK Technical Director for Building Services to lead our expertise in building services engineering, sustainability, and low-carbon solutions. This pivotal role will ensure design excellence, technical innovation, and environmental performance across our multi-disciplinary teams, empowering our Architects and Engineers to create high-quality, future-ready buildings and spaces.

This position will report directly to the UK Practice Director and Professional Head of Discipline, offering strategic leadership to a team of over 900 professionals within our UK Building Design practice.

About the Role

As a key figure in our Building Services team, you will be involved in some of the most high-profile and technically challenging projects globally. Our diverse portfolio includes residential, education, aviation, energy (nuclear, fusion, renewables), commercial, transport, and defence sectors.

This role will allow you to collaborate with designers across the UK and internationally, shaping projects that range from individual buildings to large-scale city-wide developments. You will drive technical leadership, innovation, and sustainable design strategies while ensuring the highest standards of quality and performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee technical excellence in mechanical building services design, ensuring environmental systems are integrated from the concept stage.
  • Provide expert guidance and quality assurance, reviewing designs and project progression at key milestones.
  • Take a hands-on approach in complex projects, offering in-depth technical leadership where necessary.
  • Establish and maintain technical and quality standards, in collaboration with regional Technical Authorities.
  • Identify emerging technologies and innovative solutions that enhance building performance and sustainability.
  • Support training and professional development initiatives to nurture technical expertise within the team.
  • Represent the company as a subject matter expert in mechanical building services, both internally and externally.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, industry bodies, and project stakeholders.

Location & Flexibility

This position is flexible and can be based in any of our UK offices, including London, Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol, Epsom, Leeds, Warrington, and Cardiff.

What You Bring

Expertise in Mechanical Building Services – A solid background in mechanical engineering and building services consultancy within both the public and private sectors.
Strategic Leadership – Ability to influence senior stakeholders, shape design strategies, and drive technical excellence.
Extensive Project Experience – Proven track record of delivering high-quality, technically complex mechanical designs.
Chartered Status – A degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services, along with Chartered Membership (CIBSE, IET, or similar).
Strong Leadership & Mentorship – Ability to manage, inspire, and develop a team of professionals.
Commercial & Business Awareness – An understanding of project delivery, financial management, and client engagement.
Excellent Communication Skills – A clear, professional approach to collaborating with both internal teams and external clients.
