OHL Engineer

Advance TRS is delighted to be partnering with a highly regarded engineering consultancy on an exciting opportunity for an experienced Advanced OHL Engineer to join their growing Overhead Line (OHL) team.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on major Electricity Transmission and Distribution projects from 33 kV upwards, delivering engineering solutions from feasibility and concept through to detailed design and construction.

The Role

As an Advanced OHL Engineer, you will take technical responsibility for the development and delivery of OHL projects, providing engineering expertise across steel structures, foundations, conductors, conductor systems and associated infrastructure.

You will work closely with clients, project managers, engineers and design teams to develop safe, technically robust and constructible solutions while ensuring projects are delivered to the required quality, programme and budget.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the technical delivery of OHL design projects from feasibility through to detailed design.
• Design and specify steel overhead line structures, foundations, conductors and conductor systems.
• Develop and review conceptual, preliminary and detailed OHL designs.
• Produce and check engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications and design documentation.
• Develop, review and verify PLS-CADD and PLS-TOWER models.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, client specifications and company procedures.
• Apply appropriate OHL standards including BS EN 50341, ENA/ENATS standards and client-specific requirements.
• Analyse and resolve complex engineering and design issues.
• Lead technical design reviews and provide verification of work undertaken by design teams.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary design interfaces including civil, structural, geotechnical, electrical, survey, access and construction.
• Liaise with clients, approving authorities, contractors and other stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.

The successful candidate will ideally have strong experience in:

• Overhead Line design at 33 kV and above.
• Steel lattice towers and/or steel pole structures.
• OHL foundations and structural design.
• Conductors, earth wires and conductor systems.
• Sag and tension calculations.
• Electrical clearances and statutory clearances.
• Structural loading and utilisation.
• PLS-CADD and PLS-TOWER.
• OHL design standards and client specifications.
• Design verification and technical assurance.
• Constructability and site engineering.
• CDM and design risk management.

Qualifications & Experience

• Degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Typically 5+ years’ post-graduate engineering experience, with significant experience in OHL design.
• Experience delivering OHL projects within the electricity transmission or distribution sector.
• Working knowledge of BS EN 50341, ENA/ENATS standards and relevant client specifications.
• Competent user of PLS-CADD, PLS-TOWER, SAPS or similar engineering software.
• Experience leading or mentoring engineering/design teams would be highly advantageous.
• Working towards or holding professional membership such as MICE, MIStructE or MIET is desirable.

There may also be opportunities for hybrid working and site-based activities depending on project requirements.
