The Commercial Manager will oversee all commercial element of a suite of projects, involvement in tenders, together with holding a wider interest in the overall commercial performance of the business, maximising profitability, protecting the company’s legal and contractual obligations and leading on all financial and commercial issues.
To provide support to the commercial director and the board of directors in identifying and managing risk with all relevant migration measures, ensuring accuracy of financial reporting at all times.
To aspire to the highest standards of Commercial leadership and behaviours, acting decisively and promptly to achieve the best outcomes for the company.
To maintain, promote and retain strong relationships with external parties providing mutual benefits and promoting teamwork and co-operation across all departments.
To understand and adhere to the company commercial systems and procedures, as well as the companies SHEQ policy/strategy. Managing others to ensure their roles and responsibilities are adhered to and the individuals are developed and managed.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Compliance and achievement of project, procedures, personal targets and initiatives.
- Promote a sense of Teamwork with your Operational equivalent (Ops Director).
- Consistently promote the company values treating client relationships as our most valuable asset.
- Manage commercial activities for the company and take overall responsibility of all commercial activities on site and ensure project targets are achieved.
- Actively develop and strengthen relationships with clients, supply chain and their teams to maximise team and business goals.
- Provide leadership to ensure the project teams.
- Achieve or exceed budgeted targets, maintaining a high level of commercial and financial control.
- Resolve disputes and legal matters in a timely manner.
- Ensure that capital employed, WIP and overvalue targets are maximised.
- Ensure that Forecast/CVR reports are accurately completed to reflect the current position on site and the final profit projection.
- Develop, motivate and retain surveying staff within operating team, including recruitment.
- Promote ideas and add value to each project team to maximise project results.
- Provide commercial & technical support and advice to Operations / Commercial Director.
- Monitoring the timing and completeness of subcontract orders.
- Take ownership of key project goals.
- Oversee the complete procurement process, ensuring company systems and procedures are followed and robust orders placed once suitable tender process undertaken.
- Working collaboratively and communicating effectively with other areas of the business to provide exceptional support
- To work to the Company’s Quality, Environmental and Safety Management System standards and performance criteria including delivering the objectives set
- To co-operate on matters of health and safety and follow the training provided. To take reasonable care of personal and others health and safety at all times
- Any other duties consistent with the role of Commercial Director as may be required from time to time.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Degree in Quantity Surveying or appropriate alternative.
- Experience in commercial manager position/managing teams.
- Valid driving licence.
Proven experience of:
- Proven track record in a Commercial Management/leadership role being successfully undertaken historically.
- Wide experience in a relevant Main Contracting Senior Commercial Role.
- Extensive knowledge of relevant computer software such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Microsoft Project.
- A detailed knowledge of relevant contract conditions, including JCT/NEC.
- Up to date relevant knowledge of building legislation and construction industry.
- A full successful track record in leading financial management and cost control on projects.
- Delivering projects.
- 15 years of working experience in the construction industry.
- Managing and developing commercial teams.
- Efficient use of resources.
- Dealing with a variety of forms of construction such as Concrete Frame, Steel Frame etc.
- Effective use of resources.
- Highly organised and able to work under pressure.
- Man management.
- A high level of organisation and achieving deadlines.
- Reporting on a number of simultaneous projects.
- Maintaining technical knowledge and understanding.
- Demonstrable understanding of cash management.
- Understanding of contract law.
- Feedback new and effective systems and controls into the business.
- A demonstrable track record of people management.
- Promoting change and initiatives and assisting in its implementation in the business.
- Demonstrable experience in line management and developing junior team members.
- Excellent verbal communication and numerical skills.
