Sam Riley – Young Rail Professionals

We are delighted to announce that our Recruitment Consultant Sam has taken up a new position as External Engagement Lead for the Young Rail Professionals. Sam started his Rail journey with Advance TRS  2 years ago, specialising in areas such as cyber security, Software, systems, and digital Rail. In his two years at Advance TRS, Sam has proven to be a dynamic force, consistently delivering high-quality recruitment solutions with both candidates and clients.   

Young Rail Professionals (YRP) was established with the mission to promote the rail industry as a great place to work, inspire the next generation of railway talent and develop young people to reach their potential. YRP serves as a unifying platform bringing together individuals from diverse fields within the industry, including Engineering, Asset management, Train operations, Strategic planning, Maintenance, Franchising Regulation, Marketing, Human relations or otherwise.  

Our Employee Engagement Coordinator Emilie asked Sam some questions regarding Young Rail Professionals.  

Q: What was your journey to becoming Executive External Engagement Lead? 

My journey to becoming the Executive External Engagement Lead with YPO was very rewarding. It began when I attended the YRP awards in 2023, held in Birmingham. There, I had the opportunity to meet Bonnie, the chair of YRP, who encouraged me to participate in events held in London. Following this suggestion, I engaged with the YRP at various events throughout 2023. From this the board committee approached me inquiring if I would be interested in interviewing for the Executive External Engagement Lead position. On April 1st, my journey came full circle as I officially started my role as the Executive External Engagement Lead. I am excited about the growth and development of YRP and am thrilled to continue making meaningful impacts in this role.  

Q: What are your key responsibilities?  

My key responsibilities revolve around fostering collaboration between Rail organisations and YRP. I help to develop and strengthen relationships with our current sponsors while also exploring opportunities to engage with potential sponsors, paving the way for sustained support and growth. A significant aspect of my role involves seeking avenues for cost savings for YRP by facilitating integration with other companies. Furthermore, I serve as an interface with new rail organisations to drive the continued growth of YRP.  

Q: What advice would you give to young professionals aspiring to take on leadership roles within the rail industry?  

My advice would be simple. 100% go for it. Embrace the opportunity as it offers a fantastic platform to develop essential leadership skills that will undoubtedly benefit your career. One of the most valuable aspects is the opportunity to meet and network with senior leaders. As a leader you’ll have the privilege of advising young rail professionals on ideas for the future. So don’t hesitate to seize leadership opportunities within the rail sector. 

Q: Can you discuss any projects you have been involved in so far? 

One of my most recent projects I’ve been involved in was attending a BCRRE rail event in Goole. This experience provided an excellent opportunity for networking, allowing me to connect with industry leaders and professionals in the rail sector.
