Technical Principal – Electrical / HV Substation Design

We are recruiting for an experienced Technical Principal / Principal Electrical Engineer to join a leading consultancy working across the UK energy and power sector.
This is a senior technical role within a Transmission & Distribution environment, supporting projects from early-stage optioneering and concept design through detailed design, commissioning and completion.
The role is suited to an experienced electrical engineer with strong 11kV-33kV network, HV/LV, substation and renewable generation connection experience, combined with project leadership, client management and mentoring capability.
Key Responsibilities
Front-End & Optioneering
-
Capture and agree stakeholder requirements.
-
Assess network configuration, resilience and operational scenarios.
-
Lead and support site surveys.
-
Develop technical options and recommendations.
-
Produce reports to support client decision-making.
Electrical & Substation Design
-
Deliver electrical designs for 11kV-33kV networks.
-
Cable sizing, routing and termination.
-
Develop HV substation layouts and equipment specifications.
-
Design control and protection schemes, including G99.
-
Multicore and fibre-optic cable design.
-
Earthing system design.
-
Substation LVAC and DC system design.
-
Interpret client and DNO standards.
-
Produce high-quality technical drawings, calculations and design deliverables.
Project & Technical Leadership
-
Lead electrical engineering packages and projects.
-
Coordinate multidisciplinary design interfaces.
-
Manage technical deliverables against programme and quality requirements.
-
Conduct design reviews and provide technical assurance.
-
Act as a key client interface.
-
Lead technical meetings and workshops.
-
Resolve complex engineering and design issues.
-
Provide technical guidance to junior engineers.
Commissioning & Construction Support
-
Respond to construction and commissioning queries.
-
Attend site meetings and design reviews.
-
Provide technical support during construction.
-
Resolve site-based technical issues.
-
Support commissioning and project close-out.
Bids & Business Development
-
Provide technical input into bids and tenders.
-
Support methodologies, programmes and resource proposals.
-
Prepare technical capability statements.
-
Support client development and new opportunities.
Candidate Requirements
Essential
-
Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering.
-
Chartered Engineer status or equivalent.
-
Extensive electrical project engineering experience.
-
Strong 11kV-33kV network design experience.
-
Strong HV substation and HV/LV design knowledge.
-
Experience with control and protection systems, including G99.
-
Experience producing specifications, calculations, drawings and design deliverables.
-
Ability to lead projects from early design through commissioning.
-
Strong multidisciplinary coordination and stakeholder-management skills.
-
Knowledge of DNO/TSO standards and regulations.
-
Experience mentoring or developing engineers.
-
Strong Microsoft Office skills.
Desirable
-
Renewable generation and grid connection experience.

Net-zero energy project experience.
-
Experience with data centres, aviation, healthcare, nuclear or defence.

Commissioning and site-support experience.
-
Bid preparation and proposal-writing experience.
-
Willingness to travel within the UK and internationally.
