Highways Projects Supervisor based in East Sussex.
Reports to: Project Manager / Senior Project Manager / Construction Manager
Experience
- Experience supervising site teams or subcontractors in highways, civils, public realm, paving or similar infrastructure environments.
- Experience using RAMS, task briefings, permits, inspections and daily records to control site delivery.
- Experience working in a client-facing or public-facing environment where communication, customer impact and stakeholder confidence are important.
Accountabilities
- Safe delivery and setting people to work
- Set operatives and subcontractors to work with clear scope, task briefings, risk controls and quality expectations.
- Confirm those undertaking activities have the required competence, induction, task briefing and permits before work starts.
- Review RAMS, permits, temporary works controls and site constraints before commencing activities.
- Stop work and escalate where conditions, behaviours or competence do not support safe delivery.
Project delivery and programme control
- Coordinate labour, plant, materials, access, traffic management, associated assets and supply chain resources to achieve short-term plans.
- Maintain daily records, progress updates, photographs, site diaries and production information to support commercial and programme reporting.
- Manage local site constraints and interfaces, escalating risks, blockers and changes promptly to the Project Manager.
Quality management and right-first-time delivery
- Lead quality checks, inspection and test requirements, hold points and handover records for assigned works.
- Ensure works are delivered in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, permits, contract requirements and local standards.
- Identify defects, non-conformances and incomplete works early, ensuring corrective action is agreed, recorded and closed out.
People, stakeholder and customer focus
- Provide clear direction and coaching to site teams, developing competence and consistent ways of working.
- Maintain professional communication with clients, supply chain, stakeholders and the public during works.
- Support a culture of Zero Harm, collaboration, inclusion, continuous improvement and respectful working.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Core skills and knowledge
- Highways construction, maintenance or improvement works including excavation, reinstatement, surfacing, kerbing, paving, assets, street furniture and associated civil engineering activities.
- Ability to plan, brief, supervise and record daily works in a live highway environment.
- Understanding of quality assurance, inspection records, hold points, as-built information and defect management.
- Awareness of commercial implications of site decisions, records, delays, change and dayworks.
- Confident use of digital tools for site records, programming, photographs and document control.
Essential competency requirements – subject to local role confirmation
- SSSTS or SMSTS, or company-approved equivalent supervisory qualification.
- CSCS card aligned to the supervisory role and work environment.
- NRSWA Supervisor accreditation where supervising street works activities.
- EUSR Safe Digging / Avoiding Underground Services or equivalent for breaking ground and service avoidance.
- Temporary traffic management awareness or relevant sector scheme competence for the works being supervised.
- First Aid at Work or Emergency First Aid, as required by project risk assessment.
- Relevant competency for highways activities supervised, for example highways assets, paving, surfacing, kerbing, associated assets, lifting awareness, confined space awareness, CAT and Genny, or temporary works awareness where applicable.
- Full UK driving license where travel between sites is a core requirement of the role.
