Construction Engineer (Nightworks) – Dublin

ROLE PURPOSE

The Construction Engineer – Nightworks will be responsible for the planning, coordination, supervision, and technical delivery of construction activities undertaken during night-time operations on a major infrastructure project at Dublin Airport. Reporting directly to the Construction Manager, the role will ensure that all nightworks are delivered safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project requirements, contractual obligations, and airport operational constraints.

This role will be predominantly night-shift based within a live operational airport environment and will require close coordination with airport operations, airside management, subcontractors, and project stakeholders to minimise disruption while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and operational performance.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

Nightworks Planning & Delivery

  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee night-time construction activities in accordance with approved programmes, possession windows, and access arrangements.
  • Ensure all nightworks are delivered in line with approved Risk Assessments, Method Statements (RAMS), permits, and airport operational requirements.
  • Supervise construction activities during night shifts, ensuring productivity, quality, and safety objectives are achieved.
  • Manage effective handovers between day and night shift teams to ensure continuity of works and clear communication of priorities, risks, and constraints.
  • Monitor progress and resource utilisation to ensure delivery against programme milestones.

Site Engineering & Technical Support

  • Provide engineering and technical support during night operations, including setting out, inspections, and verification of completed works.
  • Ensure construction activities are delivered in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, and technical standards.
  • Identify and resolve technical issues encountered during night shifts, escalating where necessary.
  • Support construction planning and sequencing activities to maximise efficiency during restricted working windows.
  • Maintain accurate records of completed works, surveys, and engineering activities.

Health, Safety, Environment & Airport Compliance

  • Promote and maintain the highest standards of health, safety, environmental, and quality performance throughout night operations.
  • Ensure compliance with airport safety regulations, airside permits, security requirements, and operational restrictions.
  • Enforce safe systems of work, including controls relating to fatigue management, reduced visibility, plant operations, and restricted access areas.
  • Deliver and support toolbox talks, shift briefings, and safety observations.
  • Ensure emergency response procedures, communications protocols, and escalation routes are understood and implemented by all personnel.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture and challenge unsafe behaviours or practices.

Coordination & Stakeholder Management

  • Coordinate closely with airport operations, airside management, security teams, and project stakeholders to ensure safe and efficient delivery of nightworks.
  • Manage subcontractors, suppliers, and specialist contractors operating during night shifts.
  • Liaise regularly with the Construction Manager, Site Management team, and other project disciplines regarding progress, constraints, and upcoming activities.
  • Coordinate logistics, plant, materials, and access requirements to support night-time operations.
  • Ensure interfaces with other contractors and workstreams are effectively managed.

Quality Assurance & Documentation

  • Ensure all works comply with project specifications, Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), quality standards, and contractual requirements.
  • Undertake inspections and quality checks during night operations.
  • Record and manage defects, snags, and non-conformances through to close-out.
  • Maintain accurate night shift reports, site records, inspection documentation, and progress updates.
  • Support the preparation of as-built records, quality documentation, and handover packs.

Programme & Reporting

  • Monitor and report on progress against short-term and overall programme objectives.
  • Identify programme risks, operational constraints, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Provide detailed written and verbal handover reports following each shift.
  • Support recovery planning, resequencing activities, and productivity improvement initiatives where required.
  • Assist with project reporting and performance monitoring activities.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential Criteria

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in a Construction Engineer, Site Engineer, or similar construction delivery role.
  • Previous experience managing or supporting nightworks within construction, infrastructure, or operational environments.
  • Strong understanding of construction sequencing, site operations, and engineering principles.
  • Experience working within live operational environments with strict safety, access, and permit controls.
  • Strong knowledge of Risk Assessments, Method Statements (RAMS), permit systems, and safe systems of work.
  • Excellent organisational, coordination, and communication skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and work effectively under pressure in safety-critical environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities during night shifts.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience working on airport, aviation, rail, transportation, or other 24/7 operational infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with Irish construction regulations, standards, and industry practices.
  • Safe Pass certification.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Dublin Airport Security Clearance.
  • Experience coordinating multiple subcontractors and work packages during out-of-hours operations.
  • Knowledge of NEC contracts and collaborative project delivery environments.
  • Previous experience working within airside or security-controlled environments.
