Job Title: Senior or Principal Civil Engineer – Rivers & Coastal
Salary: £48,000-£65,000 DOE
Location: Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Plymouth, Taunton or Truro
Type: Permanent, Hybrid
About the Role:
Our client is seeking a Senior or Principal Civil Engineer to join their growing Rivers & Coastal team. This role offers the opportunity to work on a wide range of river engineering, flood risk management and land development projects for both public and private sector clients.
You’ll be involved throughout the full project lifecycle, from concept and optioneering through to construction, delivering sustainable engineering solutions that help protect communities and support future development.

Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare designs for flood risk management, river engineering, river restoration and drainage strategies.
- Produce engineering calculations and technical reports to support planning and design.
- Develop plans and drawings throughout all project stages from concept to construction.
- Design earthworks, river structures and drainage schemes, including technical specifications.
- Carry out quality assurance reviews to ensure high standards of design.
- Liaise with the Environment Agency and other stakeholders to secure project approvals.
- Work closely with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Support projects during construction through site inspections and technical queries.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team growth.
- Undertake project management responsibilities where appropriate.
What Our Client is Looking For:
- Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer status, or working towards chartership.
- Minimum 3 years’ UK consultancy experience (ideally 5-10 years).
- Strong experience within river engineering, flood risk management or environmental/infrastructure design.
- Experience producing Flood Risk Assessments and designing Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).
- Good understanding of current UK standards and environmental legislation.
- Excellent communication skills with experience working alongside clients and multidisciplinary teams.
- Able to work independently and manage project responsibilities.
Desirable experience:
- AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D.
- InfoDrainage, MicroDrainage or similar software.
- Project management experience.
- Line management or mentoring experience.
