Job Title: Earthworks Examiner – Railway
Type: Contract, 6 months
Location: Peterborough
We are currently seeking experienced Earthworks Examiners for a seasonal contract role to support a major geotechnical inspection programme. This is a hands-on, site-based position involving the inspection of embankments and cuttings for geotechnical defects across the rail network.
This is seasonal work that takes place from late October 2025 to May 2026, ideal for individuals looking for an outdoor, technically engaging role.
You will be working independently, travelling directly from your home to site, covering areas within Peterborough and surrounding. A van and expenses will be provided.
Key Responsibilities:

Undertake Earthwork Examinations across multiple railway environments.

Carry out site reconnaissance to determine access strategies.

Liaise with Access Planning teams to finalise logistics and Safe Work Packs.

Complete and submit accurate inspection reports to the required standard.

Close out any rejected exams and respond to feedback where necessary.

Support planning activities including access, possessions, and integration opportunities.

Maintain compliance with safe systems of work, method statements, and all relevant standards.

Follow all company policies and procedures.
Essential Skills & Experience:
-
COSS or IWA competency – required to work on the operational railway.

PTS
-
Earthwork Examination competency (Level 3) in both Soil (GEO-I-S) and Rock (GEO-I-R) slopes.

Experience producing detailed and accurate exams.

Comfortable working independently, outdoors in all weather conditions.

Strong working knowledge of Safe Systems of Work (e.g., possessions, line blocks, blockades).

Proficient in using inspection systems such as JBA Database and GisMapp.

Able to manage workload, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.
-
Good communication skills and a professional, customer-focused approach.
Desirable:
-
Familiarity with planning systems.
-
Experience acting as a ‘Responsible Manager’ and endorsing Safe Work Packs.
-
Rail industry experience will be favoured.
Additional Information:

Work is all site-based with no night shifts.
-
Role involves walking embankments and cuttings in varied terrain.

You will be part of a wider team but expected to operate independently.

DBS clearance is required before the October start date.
