Hydrological Forecasting Analyst

Our client develops a globally scalable operational system providing data on rainfall severity, flood inundation footprints and depth, and flood impacts. The software supports operational flood management in the infrastructure, insurance, utilities and civil contingencies sectors. It is in operation in several countries internationally including the UK, Australia, Pakistan and Myanmar, with ongoing projects to set up the system in Democratic Republic of Congo, Togo, Ghana and a number of other countries.

Due to a growing number of projects, our client is looking for a Hydrological Forecasting Analyst to join their team.

The role involves the following:

In depth knowledge of hydrological models at a variety of scales (such as GloFAS) is key for this role.

The research and development nature of our clients’ software means that there is always the opportunity to further improve the methods and data used in the system. You will take a lead role in developing the science used in our clients’ software, in particular the hydrological models used by the system.

You will work closely with a team of scientists and software developers located in several offices and the role will require liaising with clients, projects managers and other team members.

You will be involved in mentoring and supporting the technical development of less experienced colleagues in the team.

There will be the opportunity to contribute to research and development projects, collaborating with academia and other researchers.

Location:

The location for this role is flexible although ideally the role would be located with other members of the Flood team – at the Skipton, Coleshill or Wallingford offices.

Qualifications and experience

Who we are looking for:

You will have an environmental or physical science related qualification, at PhD or equivalent level. Applicants should be chartered or show a desire to work towards becoming chartered. Our client will support you through their professional mentoring programming to gain chartership if required.

Strong and proven communication skills are a prerequisite for this position.

You will have the ability to work on your own and as part of a team, have experience of problem solving and communicate effectively both in writing and verbally with colleagues and clients. Strong time management skills are essential.

Core skills required include:

  • Knowledge of hydrology and rainfall-runoff models covering a range of scales, with particular emphasis on broadscale modelling and linking to forcing data.
  • Programming – preferably R or Python.
  • GIS (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS) / spatial data analysis.
  • Working to programme and budget.
  • Teamwork and mentoring junior staff.
  • Report writing and quality assurance.
  • Client liaison.

Desirable skills include:

  • Experience of validation and calibration of hydrological models.
  • Knowledge of the principles of flood inundation mapping.
  • Contract management and tender preparation.
  • Project management.
