Job Title: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: London (Hybrid is available)
Rate: £45/hour (Outside IR35)
Contract Length: 6 Months (ASAP Start)
Company Type: Small to Medium Enterprise (SME)

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to support our growing pipeline of commercial CAT A and CAT B fit-out projects across London. Working with a dynamic and agile SME, you’ll take a lead role in delivering high-quality mechanical design solutions from concept through to construction stage.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the mechanical design and coordination of commercial fit-out projects (CAT A & B)
  • Produce detailed mechanical drawings, specifications, schematics, and schedules
  • Perform heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) and public health design calculations
  • Conduct site surveys, technical assessments, and attend design and coordination meetings
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders including architects, contractors, and end clients
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant codes, regulations, and sustainability standards
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers (if required)

Requirements:

  • Minimum 7+ years’ experience in mechanical building services design
  • Strong background in commercial CAT A and CAT B fit-out projects
  • Proficient in relevant design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Hevacomp, IES)
  • Excellent understanding of UK Building Regulations and CIBSE guidelines
  • Comfortable working autonomously within a small team environment
  • Strong communication and client-facing skills

Contract Details:

  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Contract Length: 6 months (possible extension)
  • Rate: Circa £45/hour (Outside IR35)
  • Location: London-based projects; flexible/hybrid working options may be available

Position: Senior Mechanical Engineer
Location: Leeds
Salary: £50,000 (Dependent on experience)
Working Hours: 37 Hours per week (No weekends)

About the Role:

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join a leading consultancy in Leeds. This permanent position will see you design and manage Mechanical services for a wide variety of construction projects. You will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of mechanical services, including producing detailed designs, budget estimates, specifications, and contract administration for mechanical-led projects. You will also be involved in promoting sustainability through renewable technologies and driving high-quality service delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design & Management: Oversee the design and management of mechanical services for various building projects, including producing budget estimates, service specifications, drawings, and tender documentation.
  • Project Delivery: Ensure mechanical projects are completed in accordance with the client’s brief and professional standards.
  • Renewable Technologies: Promote and integrate renewable energy technologies into designs where possible.
  • Multidisciplinary Approach: Champion a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to project delivery, ensuring seamless coordination across teams.
  • Resource Coordination: Schedule and coordinate resources, liaising with colleagues, commissioners, and clients as necessary.
  • Financial Management: Monitor project profitability, ensuring projects are delivered within the agreed budget and professional fees. Take corrective action when required.
  • Surveys & Inspections: Carry out condition surveys or dilapidation assessments, contributing to asset management systems or stock condition reports.
  • Quality & Efficiency: Promote the efficient, competitive, and high-quality delivery of mechanical services installations and energy management services.

Key Requirements:

  • Chartered Status: Member of the Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers (CIBSE) or working towards Chartered status.
  • Experience: Previous management/supervisory experience and a proven track record in successfully delivering mechanical projects, including alterations and refurbishments.
  • Academic Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Membership: Membership of the Engineering Council preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and working knowledge of standard building services contracts.
  • Site Experience: Hold or be willing to attain a current site card.
  • Driving License: Willingness to travel frequently to project sites.

About the Role:

We are currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for an exciting contract opportunity with a dynamic SME MEP Building Services Consultancy based in London. This is an outside IR35, contract role offering £45 per hour for a 6-month duration, with the potential for extension based on project requirements and performance.

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality mechanical design solutions for a wide range of residential and commercial projects. You will be an integral part of a small but highly skilled team, and will take ownership of project design, technical leadership, and client engagement. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer to make a real impact on exciting, varied projects in a fast-paced consultancy environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical Design: Lead the design of mechanical building services systems for residential and commercial projects, including HVAC, ventilation, heating, and cooling systems.
  • Project Leadership: Manage projects from initial concept through to delivery, ensuring designs meet client requirements, industry standards, and regulatory compliance.
  • Coordination: Collaborate closely with other engineering disciplines (electrical, structural) to ensure integrated, coordinated designs and project delivery.
  • Client Liaison: Engage with clients to understand project requirements, attend meetings, and provide technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Technical Documentation: Prepare detailed design calculations, drawings, specifications, and tender documents in line with project timelines.
  • Site Visits & Inspections: Conduct site visits for surveys, inspections, and to provide technical support during installation and commissioning phases.
  • Mentorship: Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior engineers, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure all designs adhere to industry standards, codes of practice, and health and safety regulations, maintaining high-quality outputs.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Experience: A minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in mechanical design engineering, with a proven track record of delivering building services projects in the residential and commercial sectors.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong expertise in HVAC, ventilation, heating, cooling, and other mechanical systems design.
  • Qualifications: A degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
  • Software Skills: Proficiency in industry-standard design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, IES, or Hevacomp.
  • Knowledge of Regulations: Thorough understanding of relevant industry standards, codes of practice, and regulations (e.g., Building Regulations, British Standards, etc.).
  • Project Management: Experience managing projects, including liaising with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure successful delivery.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information in an accessible manner.
  • Self-Motivation: Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
  • Experience in Residential & Commercial Projects: Experience with both residential and commercial building services projects is essential.
  • IR35 Compliance: Must be eligible to work outside of IR35.
