As we are fast approaching the end of Autumn and going into the Winter months, it’s important to stay safe and be aware of the seasonal changes.

We want to ensure that we all stay safe and get home safely every day. Here are some top tips to help you through the winter months, accessed by Track Safety Alliance (TSA)

Staying safe consists of being prepared for the various weather conditions:

  • Correct clothing and PPE

    • Wear layers of clothing under your PPE to stay warm
    • Keep your hands warm as cold hands will affect dexterity
  • Site preparation

    • Be aware of underfoot conditions
    • Check equipment is safe
    • Does the new ballast have anti-icer?
    • Are the water pipes suitably lagged?
    • Have you spread rock salt at access points and SAC cabins wherever possible that isn’t on the rails?
  • Welfare and Fatigue

    • Make sure teams have access to hot food and drinks
    • Colder temperatures exacerbate tiredness and increase fatigue, avoid standing around whilst waiting to access the track
  • Winter Driving

    • Make sure you drive with due care and attention
    • Top up your windscreen wash
    • Pack de-icer and an ice scraper in your vehicle
    • Pack spare clothes/blanket and food/drink for emergencies
    • Make sure you have sufficient fuel for your journey and emergencies

Did you know?

  • Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern and is currently estimated to affect up to 2 million people in the UK. You can find out more and seek help through the charity Mind.

Our Property Team are proud to have sponsored the IRPM Regional Seminars this year which were held all over the country. We attended all of the seminars which were held in Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Brighton and London.

The IRPM is the Institute of Residential Property Management. They are the leading professional body for residential property management professionals, providing learning and qualifications to over 4,000 members from over 1,000 organisations, who serve the private, social, build-to-rent and retirement sectors, managing estates and developments across all tenures.

The agenda for this year’s regional seminars were Cyber Security, Reinstatement Cost Assessments, Legal Update, Customer Focus & Ethics, Violence & Property Management, Health & Safety and a Workshop Session.

All of our Property Team had a chance to represent Advance TRS at the events and all took home some crucial and interesting information about the property industry. Of course, it was also a great opportunity for networking all over the country.

We look forward to next year’s seminars!

We are delighted to announce that Advance TRS has passed the ISO 27001 audit, a certificate issued by a UKAS accredited certification body, ACS Registrars.

ISO 27001 is a certification for an information security management system (ISMS).

In line with the new GDPR guidelines, we are extremely proud to have passed this audit to show that we handle personal data on a professional level.

The benefits of ISO 27001

Implementing an information security management system provides us with a system that will help to eliminate or minimise the risk of a security breach, that could have legal or business continuity implications.

An effective ISO 27001 information security management system (ISMS) provides a management framework of policies and procedures that will keep your information secure, whatever the format.

By establishing and maintaining a documented system of controls and management, risks can be identified and reduced.

Achieving ISO 27001 certification shows that we have:

  • Protected information from getting into unauthorised hands
  • Ensured information is accurate and can only be modified by authorised users
  • Assessed the risks and mitigated the impact of a breach
  • Been independently assessed to an international standard based on industry best practices

ISO 27001 certification demonstrates that we have identified the risks, assessed the implications and put in place systemised controls to limit any damage to our organisation.

Benefits include:

  • Increased reliability and security of systems and information
  • Improved customer and business partner confidence
  • Increased business resilience
  • Alignment with customer requirements
  • Improved management processes and integration with corporate risk strategies

Achieving ISO 27001 is not a guarantee that information breaches will never occur, however by having a robust system in place, risks will be reduced and disruption and costs kept to a minimum.

We would like to say a big well done to our team for all their efforts towards being able to achieve this accreditation!

In the last year alone, Advance TRS Ltd. have been presented awards including Leadership Team of the Year and Employer of the Year for Surrey. With plans to more than double the workforce again in the next 3 years, the rapidly growing team shares Andy’s commitment to providing excellent customer service to both candidates and clients alike, finding the best candidates for each role.

Building on more than 150 years of combined industry experience and mobilising the dynamism of new recruits, the team are going from strength to strength.

With business development plans firmly rooted in these five principles, Advance TRS aims to continue this pattern of growth whilst maintaining their strong reputation as dependable, effective and honest.

“Advance TRS’ success has been proven that hard work and a dedication to delivering excellent service pays off” Andy explains, reflecting on the last 7 years.

“Now, the team and I are more motivated than ever to continue this sensational track record of growth and are excited for what the future brings.”

Advance TRS’s latest charity fundraising activity was somewhat less strenuous than our usual extreme challenges for good causes. The team competed in a company ‘Bake Off’ to raise money for Macmillian Cancer Support.

Everyone made a fantastic effort to support the team Bake Off, bringing in impressive home bakes, donating or just eating! Our judges ate their way through 10 different bakes before judging Chantal’s Advance TRS inspired cake and Steve’s surprisingly tasty New Zealand apple cake the very worthy winners!

The main controversy of the morning still remains – did Mick bake the cake or is Mrs Schruyers to thank…?

The Advance TRS Property team attended the Institute of Residential Property Management (IRPM) Regional Seminar in Brighton on Thursday 13th September.

Director of Property Services, Alan, and Recruitment Consultant Kirsty, represented the team as sponsors of the Regional Seminar events.

The speakers and presentations were really informative and the team listened in on the various topics that were discussed. Some of the information that the team took away were:

  • It was announced on the 1st April this year that it will be mandatory for Leasehold Property Managers to be qualified and do ongoing CPD
  • Reforms to Leasehold and Commonhold will be on their way
  • There are approximately 4 million leaseholders in the UK
  • New build houses are no longer allowed to be leasehold
  • Working Group 8 are looking at having Building Safety Managers for each block/estate who will be legally accountable for its safety and will more than likely need professional indemnity insurance
  • The IRPM qualification will be made up of 4 key elements – Technical, Safety, Customer Focus and Ethics & Behavior

There was also a talk from Gudrun Burnet who was giving insights on the topic of domestic abuse. She is involved in a number of organisations, including Against Violence & Abuse (AVA) and Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance – DAHA.

AVA is focused around those areas where they can make the best contribution to ending violence and abuse. They are doing this by providing innovative training, developing a range of toolkits, e-learning and other material that supports professionals to provide effective and appropriate support to survivors of violence and abuse and much more.

DAHA has a mission to improve the housing sector’s response to domestic abuse through the introduction and adoption of an established set of standards and an accreditation process. DAHA is a partnership between three agencies who are leaders in innovation to address domestic abuse within housing; Standing Together Against Domestic Violence (STADV)Peabody and Gentoo.

With just 16% of jobs in rail filled by women, we need to understand how we can encourage others to join the industry and not just attract women to the railway, but also to keep, develop and promote them.

This was the key message shared at the launch of the Women in Rail South division, held in September at the Bath Function Rooms.

Set in the particularly fitting re-purposed old Green Park Railway Station in Bath, a mix of men and women from across the industry met to celebrate the launch of Women in Rail South.

Attendees heard from inspiring women working in a varied range of roles across the region, including Anna Delvecchio – Commercial Account Director for Amey, Joanna Whittington – Chief Executive Office of Rail and Road, Rajinder Pryor – Network Rail and Estelle Whittaker – CCO Achilles to name but a few.

In total, eight women shared their personal experience of working within the industry and told stories of why they love working in the rail sector.

From being part of an essential network underpinning the economic activity of the country to inspiring changes in attitudes and enjoying flexible working opportunities and the fantastic opportunity for promotion and personal development, each speaker shared their own reasons for loving being women in rail.

Inspiring speeches sparked interesting debate around what Women in Rail and the industry in general can do to close thegender gap in the railway sector, including;

  • Raising the profile of rail as a sector and engineering to school children
  • Boosting the profile of the rail industry to attract women to the sector
  • The need for male champions to further women in the industry
  • Flexible working/job shares and shared paternity leave
  • Celebrating the success / raising the profile of successful women as champions of the sector

But it wasn’t all serious talk, with networking drinks following the inspiring speeches, which provided a great opportunity to make new connections with people from all across the sector disciplines.

The evening proved to be a fantastic opportunity for members to meet others who live and work in the area, develop their professional network and engage with key industry leaders.

Your CV represents you to your future employer. Your employer wants to know why they should hire you and not any of the other applicants. So, how do you make your CV and experience stand out on a word document? Here are some top tips from our team that you need to think about when writing your CV.

Presentation

When structuring your CV, remember employers see lots of applications for each role, so if yours doesn’t make the right information easily accessible it will go straight to the bottom of the pile. The simpler it looks, the easier it is to read.

  • Invest time to tailor your personal summary specifically for the job you are applying for. This is your primary opportunity to highlight your strengths and previous successes
  • Follow on from this with your qualifications
  • Keep the font to one standard type and size
  • Don’t begin each sentence with ‘I’. Unfortunately, it is not the way to create a compelling CV
  • Keep your education and job history in chronological order. It makes sense to put the most recent achievement or job at the top of the list as this is what the employer is interested in

Be truthful

Noting down truthful experience is essential. If you feel that you have to add in an experience you haven’t completed, this job is not for you! Note down all experience you think is related to the job you are wanting to apply for and you will find the perfect employer who wants to invest in you.

Employment history

Keep this short and sweet. Employers don’t need to know every job you’ve had throughout your life. If you think, on average, 50 people apply for every job on the market. If those 50 people all have 8 paged CVs, the employer will quickly become disinterested in reading through all of that information. Save the long explanations of your employment for your interview. Just note the job role, the company and the dates you worked there and add a little bit more information on what you’ve done in your most recent roles.

Check, check and check again – no typos!

Checking your spelling and grammar is essential. You might want to ask someone to look over your work as well as using spell check and looking up any words you’re unsure of!

Make your CV role specific

Make sure you tailor your CV to suit the job you’re applying for. It’s very tempting to try to cut corners with a generic ‘one size fits all’ CV, but it is unlikely you’ll get away with it. Always read the role’s exact requirements and re-word your CV accordingly. This will involve you doing your research so you know exactly what the employer is looking for, it may take a bit of effort, but if it puts you one step closer to your dream job so it’s well worth it!

Once you are convinced that your CV meets all the job criteria and portrays you in the best possible way you are ready to search and apply!

So why is Training and Development in the workplace important?

Investment in training and development for staff is proven, not only to improve employee  performance within their job, but also helps increase confidence, employee satisfaction and increase morale and consistency within themselves.

Studies have shown that investing in employee development  increases productivity and aids business, ultimately leading to better client relationships, increased sales and increased profit.

The U.K. L&D Report: 2018 – Benchmark Your Workplace Learning  outlines learning and development statistics in the UK. It states that top-performing organisations are five times more likely to have learning cultures, suggesting a culture of learning is a key component of business success.

Key Statistics:

  • 63% of companies with increased turnover in the last year, rated leadership and management development as their top priority.
  • 31% of companies who had grown in the last year used external coaching for senior leadership. That’s twice the average.
  • Companies with decreased turnover were 2x more likely to say their staff does not prioritise learning.

An article by The Independent this year, states that two out of three UK workers have changed jobs because of a lack of training and development opportunities, two out of three employees say training is more important today than it was just two years ago, and four out of five employers believe training has a positive impact on their workers.

Research by Towards Maturity, a research company who are supported by CIPD, reveals that high performing learning organisations, on average, are seeing a 24% increase in productivity and performance as a result of learning done well.  40% of employees who don’t receive the necessary job training to become effective will leave their positions within the first year.

What does it mean to us?

You spend most of your week with your colleagues. At Advance TRS , we are dedicated to ensuring we give our staff the best possible start in their careers with the business. Network Rail has a zero-tolerance approach to individuals attending work whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Most companies will have the same approach.

Network Rail have now brought in random drugs and alcohol testing which will take place on site and in the office at any time without prior notice.

Here are the alcohol limits within Network Rail:

29 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood

13 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath

39 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of urine

These limits are set by the Railway Group Standard GE/RT8070 and are considerably lower than the government driving guidelines.

Failure to consent to testing or leaving the site before testing is completed will be regarded as a refusal to submit to testing. A positive result would then be recorded and dealt with in the same way as someone who had tested over the limit.

The possible consequences of a positive test result could be:

  • PTS certificate revoked for five years
  • Disciplinary procedure
  • Sentinel card cancelled

If you report a drugs or alcohol problem voluntarily to your line manager, HR department or supervisor and this is not reported as a consequence of expecting a positive test result, you will be able to receive support and assistance and begin a programme of rehabilitation.

You can go to further support with the following:

Validium – Employee assistance provider

Other ways to get help

There are a wide range of advice, treatment and support services for addiction in the UK. Anyone with a substance related problem can have access to such services.

Your GP might offer to treat you or might refer you to your local specialist drug service. Most local community drug units also run drop-in centres which don’t require a referral from a doctor. You should be able to find information about these on the internet or ask at your doctors’ surgery.

Don’t forget you can call Frank to discuss any issues you have confidentially on:

This summer, more than ever, it is important to look out for each other and be aware of potential dangers to ensure that we all stay safe in the sun and get home safely every day.

For the Rail Industry, the temperature is critical in the summer months and is monitored to avoid “buckling” of the track. Rail worker temperature is just as critical. Make sure you stay focused.

Remember to take on plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated all throughout the summer months, especially on those hotter days.

Make sure you take care of your skin and use sun cream on exposed skin. Site security and infrastructure access points must be controlled to prevent unauthorised access from members of the public and children during school holidays.

Did you know….?

  • There is an increased risk of fire from Hot Works and burning activities. Ensure control measures are planned to prevent a fire from sparks or heat resources. Firefighting equipment must be located at the point of work for these reasons.
  • Sun glare has contributed to an average of 28 road deaths per year in the UK since 2010. This includes pedestrians.
  • Network Rail’s alcohol limit is one-third of the England and Wales drink-drive limit.
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern and is currently estimated to affect up to 2 million people in the UK.
  • Trespassing on railway tracks is at a 10 year high.
  • People are twice as likely to trespass on the tracks over the summer – you should make sure you know if the railway you are working on is a trespassing hotspot.

Our Infrastructure Director, Rob, completed the British 10k run in Westminster to raise money for the charity Pump Aid. He had a £100 target and has now raised £170!

Pump Aid work with some of the poorest and hardest to reach communities in the world and provide two of life’s basic needs; safe water and proper sanitation.

Their current programmes consist of working with local partners to increase access to clean water, sanitation, and nutrition in preschools in Malawi, improving the life chances of some of the world’s most poverty-stricken children.

They are working on expanding access to clean, safe and reliable sources of drinking water for greater numbers of rural communities in Malawi.

Another project of theirs is to educate. They have community facilitators who have been working closely with villages across some of the most remote areas of rural Malawi to improve health and sanitation among households. They guide conversations with communities to help them understand the behaviours that lead to illnesses that cause death, disability and stunted development. Educating the communities to implement simple measures in and around their homes.

They have also been trialling a different approach to reducing water poverty by bringing in a project called Self-supply, which involves training and mentoring local entrepreneurs to equip them with the skills they need to set up viable business to build sustainable water capacity in their own communities.
In just 12 months, over 20,000 people in poor rural communities have gained access to secure, sustainable water for communal, individual and farming use. Establishing local supply businesses has helped make water pumps in rural areas more sustainable, as well as creating more social and economic opportunities for the entrepreneurs, involved in our programme, and their wider communities. This entrepreneurial approach has trained local tradespeople, such as welders and metal workers to build, repair and maintain water pumps.

Advance TRS are specialist recruiters for the built environment. We are proudly working with Pump Aid as a chosen charity by our Water & Utilities team because of the wonderful work they do.
Managing Director, Andy Ridout has always challenged himself to raise money for charities and we are delighted that Rob has done the same this year for such a great cause!

Advance TRS had a brilliant time at their Summer Conference on Friday 29th June. We worked with local businesses to organise a day for the whole company that incorporated looking back at what the company has achieved over the last year, looking forward to our goals for the future and then some team building!

The main conference was held within the fantastic facilities at G Live in Guildford. We then had local company, Containment Zone, organise a team building exercise in the form of a scavenger hunt in the afternoon. We were split into teams who were competing against each other, completing various challenges in and around Guildford Town!

This was then followed by drinks at the Guildford Harbour Hotel and then the Guildford Tup. A great day was had by all and we look forward to next years already!

The Advance TRS team return victorious after completing the 3 Peaks by Rail Challenge. The grueling challenge is not for the faint-hearted. The Advance TRS team was one of few teams where all team members completed all three mountains and were four out of 37 people who completed all three peaks!

Mick, Chantal, George and Sean endured and persevered, demonstrating incredible determination and teamwork to get through a really tough 48 hours. On the train from Crewe on the way to the first mountain, Mick says;

“Everyone discussed what they thought was in store, but everyone was way below the mark.”

The team spent weeks preparing themselves, from walking up hills on their lunch breaks to making sure they have all the equipment they needed. They started the first climb up Snowdon in the dark at 10:23 pm, navigating loose rock, spring water causing slippy patches and the freezing cold wind all in the pitch black. Nevertheless, they stuck together and got through returning to the base at 02:41 am, completing the first mountain in 4h17.

After a few hours of cramped attempts at sleep and more fantastic food laid on by the train crew the team begun the 6.5km trek to the second mountain on Friday morning. Scafell Pike proved the biggest test to the team, Sean explains;

“This mountain was by far the toughest.  The team effort was amazing to get to the top of this mountain, with others dropping out constantly it was a real challenge to try and carry on.”

6 hours and 38 minutes after their start from Brackenclose, all 4 of the Advance TRS team successfully completed the second mountain and were well over halfway.

The final and highest peak, Ben Nevis was the last hurdle of the challenge. George explains;

“The weather was not great and you couldn’t tell how high the mountain was as it was stuck up in the clouds. On the radio, all we heard was person after person dropping out of the challenge for various reasons. Undeterred we persevered through the wind, rain and even snow to complete this final mountain.”

Walking through clouds, in wet clothing made the final summit an extraordinary battle of determination with only the final descent ahead of them the team completed the final peak in 5h20, giving the team a total challenge time of 16h17.

Andy Ridout, Group Managing Director and founder of the company shares;

“What an achievement for the team completing this challenge. A great experience and something brilliant to be able to say that they have done. Hearing that only 37 people completed the whole challenge and the whole team of 4 were part of that 37 is just amazing. Congratulations to you all, you’ve done brilliantly. Not forgetting, raising money for the brilliant charity Railway Children.”

Now, home safe and sound, the challenge continues with another £1,500 remaining to raise for Railway Children. The team have already raised an incredible £2,057 for the children’s charity the team now have 5 weeks left to raise the remaining amount.

Show your support for their incredible effort by helping them over the final hurdle and donating to their online giving page.

Advance TRS are taking on the Three Peaks By Rail challenge next week!

On Thursday 14 June, the team will be arriving in Crewe to start their journey climbing Mount Snowdon throughout the night. Then they will be getting the train to the next mountain, Scafell Pike, which is the highest mountain in England at an elevation of 978 metres (3,209 ft) above sea level. Once they’ve climbed this they will then be getting the train again to the third and final peak, Ben Nevis. This is the highest peak in the British Isles which is in Scotland.

The three mountains total over 30km walking and over 3,000m of ascent. This challenge isn’t being taken lightly! The team have been training for weeks and are now gearing up for this two-day event.

The charity that organises this challenge are Railway Children who are an International children’s charity and they ‘believe in a world where no child ever has to live on the streets’. This year, Railway Children celebrates 20 years of fighting for children alone and at risk on the streets. During that time, they’ve reached more than 275,000 children in India, the UK and East Africa.

Advance TRS’s founder, Andy Ridout, and a few other members of our team, have completed numerous challenges like climbing some of the worlds highest mountains including Mt Everest and Kilimanjaro, completed Iron Man triathlons, marathons and cycling challenges to raise money and awareness for the charity. Some staff have even been out to Africa to visit the projects and witness what money raised can do to help vulnerable children in person.

We are aiming to raise £3,500 for taking part in this challenge!  Click here if you would like to support our team!

We wish our Three Peaks team the best of luck and thank the rest of the business for their fundraising efforts to help raise as much money as we can for this great charity.

Our Water Team at Advance TRS attended the Water Industry Achievement Awards at The Vox Conference Centre in Birmingham on Monday 21st May.

This event is a great occasion where all of the water companies come together to celebrate all the achievements in the water industry over the last year, with the opportunity to enter your own company for different categories to prove that you are the best in that area. The categories covered all areas including Customer Service, Drainage and Flood Prevention, Energy and Carbon, Water resilience, Engineering Projects, Most innovative use of an existing technology, Most Innovative New Technology of the year and so on. Of course, there were some overall awards which were Water Company of the year and Water Industry Contractor of the Year. There was a record-breaking number of entries and you can see the full list of winners here.

The awards night consisted of a drinks reception from 7pm followed by a 3 course meal and the awards. We sat with representatives from Severn Trent Water and a partner of theirs, Malvern Panalytical who were jointly nominated for an award – which they won! Congratulations to them and all of the winners! The night ended with a charity casino followed by drinks at the bar until the early hours of the morning.

This event was a brilliant opportunity to see this industry link together to celebrate all of it’s amazing achievements over the last year and to see how much hard work goes into each part of the water industry. It’s an excellent networking event and an all round great evening.

The team also went to Utility Week Live the next day which was at the NEC in Birmingham. This event includes a hall of company stands within the utilities industry, including green energy, utility providers, tech companies and various equipment manufacturers and more. The chance to explore the opportunities and threats of disruptive technologies and business models and of course, networking with 3,000+ utility industry colleagues and contacts. There was ongoing seminars for all the sectors and these along with the Keynote Speakers were also very interesting and it was brilliant to meet some of the VIPs of the day.

These two days were great for our Water Team and it was all very enjoyable and a great way to do some team bonding. We hope to catch up with the new people and companies that we met soon!

From the 25th May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation law takes effect. You’ve probably seen GDPR everywhere recently and that’s because it is a regulation in European Union law on data protection for every individual within the EU.

We know you may have a few questions about it and might want to know whether or not you need to prepare for it. We’ve put together what we know and will explain how it affects everyone who is registered with Advance TRS.

GDPR regulates the way personal data is treated or used within any organization who is subject to this information. Personal data is anything that can identify a person. You need to comply with the GDPR law if your company or organization has collected, stored, transmitted or even erased personal data. The old GDPR law will be replaced on the 25th May with the new one and there are some changes that have been introduced that everyone needs to be aware of.

What is Advance TRS doing to prepare?

We have updated our Privacy Policy and we will continue to be open and transparent about how and why we use your Personal Data. Our promise is to never pass your information on to any third party without your consent or to use your information for anything that you haven’t signed up for. Advance TRS Ltd. is dedicated to ensuring the privacy and security of all personal data it is required to retain. In light of the upcoming changes in legislation, the main board directors and senior managers have committed to a structured delivery programme.

The Advance TRS company structure facilitates transparent and compliant administration of the GDPR updates, this includes assigning responsibilities for Data Protection to a specific individual within the structure of the organisation. Through the implementation of defined processes and with a strong focus on managing risk, Advance TRS is committed to communicating openly with internal and external customers on how their personal data is collected and stored. This also includes a regular review of the accuracy of personal data held along with routine opportunities for this to be updated.

Advance TRS only process personal data that is essential to business operations or our continued compliance with government and regulatory bodies where we are required to achieve certain operational, vocational and administrative standards. All personal data is stored in a password-protected database located on an external server within a high-security data centre in the United Kingdom.

Data security is of paramount importance to Advance TRS as part of our protection from any data breaches. Systems are constantly monitored, audited and assessed to facilitate the detection of potential breaches.

Women In Rail was a strong topic at our recent visit to Infrarail 2018 at ExCel London. The skills gap is an increasingly important issue worldwide and it is particularly noticeable in the rail industry, as we heard from Adeline Ginn at Infrarail in her presentation to us about Women In Rail. Here are a few facts and information highlighted from the Women In Rail talk.

Adeline started off her presentation with a quote from Sharmaine Lovegrove ‘If you don’t have a diverse workforce or product, sooner or later you won’t exist’ which really ties in nicely with Advance TRS’s core values as a recruitment company, and also goes with our internal recruitment beliefs.

It is proven that diverse teams work better and give greater innovation and creativity. UK statistics are as follows with women on the Board of Directors:

  • 42% higher return on sales in the UK
  • 66% higher return on invested capital
  • 53% higher return on equity

The perception of rail as a masculine industry has been identified as a big impact factor preventing women from joining the sector. Women seem to fall into rail by accident rather than by choice. Engineering is often a misunderstood role and girls as young as 7 years old have an unconscious bias misconception of rail. This is where Women In Rail are keen to make a change, helping children at a young age understand the sector fully before misconception sets in.

Here are some more surprising figures we gained from Adeline:

  • 16.4% of the workforce are women
  • 78% of this number are in non-manager roles
  • 2% are senior managers
  • 4% are engineers

Some challenges that Women In Rail have noticed and want to help change are Working practices (women might need flexible working and not long days) and recruitment targeting men.

Women In Rail have already started many initiatives to help with this, including a mentoring programme, networking events, networking platform, campaigns, an online hub for women and many others.

This year, they celebrated their first Women In Rail Awards which was a great success with over 130 attendees from across the rail industry. It showcased individuals, teams and companies (large or small) who in the last 5 years have done amazing work to improve gender balance, diversity and inclusion in the UK railway industry. We look forward to seeing the continued growth and success of this!

Advance TRS are committed to supporting diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We are careful to check for bias in our job adverts to ensure that women are not excluded. Within the recruitment sector, we realise that women and men even look at job adverts differently. If a job advert is published, sometimes it can be directed towards men just by the simple wording, which could put a woman off straight away and they may disregard it.

We believe in delivering the very best candidates for our clients. By excluding 50% of the workforce, you may miss out on the best person for the job. So it is our job to make sure we are including absolutely everyone possible into our candidate searches.

Explore our latest jobs here.

Some of the Advance TRS team had a chance to take a trip to Infrarail which was held at ExCel London between the 1st-3rd May this year. Infrarail is firmly established as Britain’s leading showcase for every aspect of railway infrastructure technology and expertise, with a strong reputation for attracting visiting managers, engineers and buyers at the highest level.

The marketing team travelled there on the 1st May and managed to sit in on a talk from Chris Grayling which was fantastic. He spoke about the strategy for the railway including passengers and freight. The general progress of the rail industry as a whole including expanding the UK network and plans to build overseas presence. He also spoke about the the current situations of Crossrail, HS2, CP6, North-South Line, Old Oak Common, Transplan upgrate, East-West Rail and Ealing North Junction. He then spoke about the plans for the next 5 years for rail.

After his speech, he then proceeded to answer a few questions from those who were in the audience. We have a video of his talk on our twitter page which we recorded live, if you want to have a listen you can click here.

Adeline Ginn, the founder of Women In Rail, presented in the Knowledge hub in the afternoon. It was great to hear her presentation which explained to us how she started Women In Rail on LinkedIn 5 years ago and how big this has now become.

She spoke about how having more women in the rail industry would help improve the business of rail by increasing return on sales, increasing return on invested capital and increasing return on equity. At the moment, only 16.4% of the rail workforce are women.

The company provide all sorts of support for women in the industry from networking events and a networking platform, to a mentoring programme and a professional algorithm and set up. We know how passionate she is about this and how much she believes in women having a platform to meet other professionals who understand exactly where they are coming from.

Both of these talks were inspiring and are keeping us up to date with what is going on in the rail industry!

On June 14th 2018, 4 of the Advance TRS team are taking on the Stadler Three Peaks Challenge By Rail for the children’s charity Railway Children!

As long-term supporters of Railway Children and specialist suppliers of skilled personnel for the rail industry, this is an ideal challenge for us to take on. We are delighted to take part in this year’s challenge.

This year Advance TRS Infrastructure Director, Mick, will be joined by some of the younger members of our team; Sean, Chantal and George in our latest challenge to raise money for Railway Children.

Railway Children:

Our team will be looking to raise over £3,500 for the charity. Railway Children is an international children’s charity, with outreach teams operating out of the UK, India and East Africa. Donations help to fund street teams that seek out children living in squalid conditions on the streets, where the charity’s team of experts can meet the child’s immediate needs and attempt to reintegrate them back into normality.

Since establishing in 2011, giving back to those less fortunate and advancing others has been a central motivator for founder Andy Ridout and the growing Advance TRS team. To date, Andy and the Advance team have climbed some of the worlds highest mountains including Mt Everest and Kilimanjaro, completed Iron Man triathlons, marathons and cycling challenges to raise money and awareness for the charity. Some staff have even been out to Africa to visit the projects and witness what money raised can do to help vulnerable children in person.

The Challenge:

The 3 peaks challenge is well known to be a gruelling test of fitness and determination. Over 24 hours, the teams will climb the 3 highest peaks in Wales, England and Scotland, totalling over 30km walking and over 3,000m of ascent.

They will start from Mount Snowdon, climbing throughout the night of the 14th June before getting the train to Dalegarth and climbing Scafell Pike. They will then head to the third, final and highest peak, Ben Nevis. This will involve over 1325m of climbing and a 7.5km trek from start to summit before heading back down the mountain.

We wish all four of our colleagues the best of luck on their training for the next 10 weeks and will be working together to raise as much as possible to smash our £3,500 target!

This March, a team from Advance TRS have taken on Cancer Research UK’s #WalkAllOverCancer challenge, each team member committing to walking 10,000 steps a day in March.

Ranging from company directors to consultants, and the back office team, each division of the company is represented and we are keeping track of everyone’s progress with a company steps leaderboard.

As a competitive bunch, we have upped the stakes by adding our own incentives into the mix. The person who completes the least amount of steps each week must donate a mandatory contribution to our fundraising whilst the person who completes the least amount of steps throughout the whole month will have to take up a forfeit… watch this space!

Follow us on twitter to keep up to date with daily updates on the latest leaderboard scores and make sure to cheer on for your favourite team member!!

Whilst we are all enjoying the fun and games of a little healthy competition, we are all doing all this to help beat cancer sooner. Cancer survival rates have doubled over the past 40 years. Consistent progress is being made but improvements to technology and ground-breaking work offer new opportunities to find different ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer and improve survival rates even further. Help us Walk All Over Cancer and fund life-saving research by sponsoring our team through our online fundraising page.

Final update: we have managed to raise

£1000 for Cancer Research UK!

Well done everyone and thank you all again for your sponsors. We did this for a great cause and all donations are very much appreciated by us and of course, by Cancer Research UK.

Keep up to date with updates from the team!

Day 21

With 10 days to go until the end of the challenge, the team is still going strong! Two of our team, Steve and Vickie, have hit 300,000 steps which is incredible. Louise isn’t far behind that mark either so it’s still all to play for!

We’ve also had a few more donations and have now raised £110 so far. We would love to reach a target of £250 so if anyone is feeling generous please click here to donate!

Please to help us on our way by donating to our fundraising page! For every £1 we raise the company will match the donations, doubling your money!

Day 9

The competition is well and truly heating up now with a leading pack having broken out with 7 people who have already completed over 100k steps. People are going further than simply aiming to complete their 10k steps and aiming for a prized spot in the Top 5!

  6. Carolyn – 104,158
  7. Jess – 100,115

Day 8

One week into the challenge and the competition is heating up. With 80k steps to get before midnight tonight to stay on track, challengers have started to get imaginative to get their steps in. One person who has climbed her way up the rankings is our Finance Director, Carolyn who made the most of a few days away in Newcastle, exploring the city and getting 30k steps in 2 days. A lunchtime walking club has also sprung up, with groups of people venturing out for a wander around town to make up steps each day. Follow us on Instagram to see what we have been up to!

Day 5

With the snow finally subsiding the weather is looking much more conducive to getting our steps in this week! The weekend has turned the leaderboard upside down with some lazy days and marathon efforts leaving it all to play for! Day 2

Day 2 of the challenge and the snow has thrown a curve ball for many peoples plans to hit the magic 10k a day! With half our team working from home people have had to get inventive with their walking – more than a few walks around peoples coffee tables to get the steps in today! One person who has not shied away from the challenge is Steve – rather than admit defeat, being unable to drive out of his road he took on the challenge to walk the 10-mile cross country trek from Farnham to Head Office in Guildford and back again. Not one to miss out on his training he also managed to fit in two gym sessions, just for the fun of it.

Day 1

Great start to the 10k a day challenge with snowfall creating a complete whiteout for most of Surrey. Advance TRS are delighted to welcome experienced recruitment and business development professional Michael Schruyers to the team as Infrastructure Director. Joining Advance TRS with immediate effect, Schruyers is the latest in a succession of industry leaders to join the rapidly growing recruitment company.

Starting out as a consultant in 2000 after a career change, Schruyers quickly worked his way up through the ranks and made a name for himself within the rail recruitment industry. As a specialist Permanent Way and Civils recruiter, he found a niche for himself sourcing and placing Stressing Engineers on some of the UK’s biggest projects.

Schruyers then joined Resourcing Solutions in 2011, focusing his attention on business development, where he helped secure large contracts across the UK. He then became their Rail Director in 2014, helping grow the rail business from £22 million to over £50 million. Here Schruyers worked to build up the rail division, focusing on supplying specialist labour and filling niche requirements in the sector.

“As a goal-oriented person, I found myself in a position where I had accomplished all the goals I had set out for myself,” explains Schruyers. “By joining Advance TRS I feel my experience can really make an impact on the company and Andy’s enthusiasm has re-injected the fun factor into work.”

“I find Andy’s energy, drive and enthusiasm are hard to beat. I am excited to join his team to help and be part of this exciting company’s journey.”

“It was the structure of the senior management team and the incredible assembly of industry experts that have joined Andy over the past few years that pushed me to join Advance TRS. Appointments such as Paul Merton as Operations Director, Paul Dredge leading the Water & Utilities team, Paul Scott as Non-Executive Director and most recently Paul Metcalfe joining as CEO last year that really caught my attention. I am excited to join such an experienced and well-respected team of industry professionals.”

Advance TRS founder and Managing Director Andy Ridout explained “We are excited to welcome Mick to the team and are looking forward to how he can support us in the next phase of our journey,”

“Since establishing the business 6 years ago we have experienced phenomenal levels of growth and expanded into 3 new sectors. This growth has been rooted in exploiting the specific expertise of seasoned industry professionals, doing what they do best with a singular dedication to delivering excellent customer service. Mick is a brilliant addition to the team and we are thrilled to have him on board.”

A huge thank you to everyone who attended the IRSE Scottish Section Annual Dinner last week and generously contributed to another record-breaking fundraising total for Railway Children. Over the past 3 years Andy Ridout, Group Managing Director of specialist recruitment consultancy Advance TRS, has championed the children’s charity with a heartfelt plea at the annual event, raising more year on year.

This year we have yet again topped the previous year’s donations with a whopping total of £3,623.37! This is exceptional, especially in light of having fewer people in attendance than in previous years. In light of the incredible effort, Ridout has kindly topped up the donations to £4,000.

“There’s not enough I could say to thank the members of the IRSE Scottish section for their substantial donations in Glasgow. Your donations will go towards helping the most vulnerable children worldwide. It’s so inspiring to see so many from the rail industry come together to change the lives of thousands of disadvantaged people every year” explains Ridout.

This year Andy took on the extraordinary challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and competing in the Copenhagen Ironman Triathlon to raise money and awareness for the charity. He also traveled to a village in Tanzania to see one of the charity’s projects first hand for the first time.

As a father of 4 himself, walking through streets, meeting children as young as 4 or 5, sleeping rough because their parents do not have enough food or money to feed them, has spurred Andy on to continue to do what he can to change the lives of these vulnerable young people.

We are delighted to announce that for the third year running Advance TRS has successfully passed the Railway Industry Supplier Qualification Scheme (RISQS) Audit and retained the 5 star status with no observations, no non-conformances and top marks in all areas.

Our compliance team work tirelessly all year round to ensure we follow best practice at all times and that all our processes and procedures are current. This latest accreditation recognises our ongoing commitment to excellence in all our systems and procedures.

Working in a number of safety critical engineering sectors, we have a robust compliance management system that is structured with very clear processes and procedures. This system has been developed to deliver the ongoing management of individual competencies held by external workers, as well as supporting the requirements of each industry sector’s specific standards and scheme requirements.

This compliance procedure incorporates a bespoke database that highlights renewals of qualifications, supplier certificates and competencies. The continued management of this area of our business is essential when supplying workers to industries where safety is foremost in everyone’s daily working lives.

“RISQS is the single entry point for suppliers to the rail industry and as a ‘5 Star’ RISQS accredited supplier to the rail industry, we believe that we all have a responsibility to deliver a professional service that meets continues to achieve and exceed the industry standards” explains Group Managing Director Andy Ridout.

“This is a fantastic achievement and we are immensely proud of the whole team who work hard all year round to maintain our trademark top quality service.”

Andy Ridout, Group Managing Director of Advance TRS has completed his trek up Mount Kilimanjaro for the children’s charity Railway Children. This is the latest in a succession of daring challenges Andy has undertaken including an astounding 3 Ironman triathlons.

He reached the top of the volcanic mountain in the early hours of Sunday morning after a 7 day trek. It’s a fantastic achievement and has raised a substantial amount of money for the charity and hopes of the children it helps. From trekking through the wooden village of Nale Moru, to crossing icefields on the crater rim, it’s been an eventful, arduous and visually breath-taking journey up the 6000m precipice of Kilimanjaro for Andy.

His journey continues (after a brief rest) as he flies to Mwanza to visit a Railway Children project. This is where all the generous donations are used to get vulnerable children off the street, something Andy and the Advance TRS team are very passionate about.

Since establishing in 2011, giving back to those less fortunate and advancing others has been a central motivator for founder Andy Ridout and the growing Advance TRS team. Railway Children is an international charity that helps at-risk children on the streets of the UK, India and East Africa. The charity funds rescue workers and street teams that seek out vulnerable children living on the streets before potential abusers get to them first. In the last 20 years, the charity has helped to change the lives of more than 270,000 children across the world.

The £100 Give

Having already raised over £30,000 for Railway Children, Andy has set his sights higher, striving to raise a total of £100,000 for Railway Children by convincing 1,000 people to donate £100 to this fantastic charity. For some people, losing £100 would be an inconvenience. For these children, it could be life-changing.

Andy’s fundraising has already got off to a solid start, having raised over £6,000 towards this goal. “This challenge will be made a whole lot easier with your generous donations, and I can’t do this without your help. Any amount that you can donate will be warmly received and goes directly towards helping the world’s most vulnerable children,” says Ridout.

This year’s Rail: North of the Border Event in Glasgow was another huge success, raising over £2,487 for children’s charity Railway Children.

Over 270 industry professionals attended the second annual dinner at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Glasgow. The event brings together key people from across the sector to discuss the delivery of the many rail projects in Scotland.

A keynote speech delivered by Karl Budge, Network Rail Infrastructure Director, Scotland was followed by a Panel Discussion and Q&A Karl Budge – Network Rail, Alex Hynes – ScotRail Alliance, Peter Broadley, Executive Director, Customer Service & Operations – Virgin, Robert Samson, Senior Stakeholder Manager – Transport Focus and Richard Osborne – Cisco.

The total raised on the night added to the £1,740 raised by Advance TRS staff through the summer has added over £3,000 to Managing Director, Andy’s fundraising total. Over the summer Ridout has completed his third Iron Man and summited Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money and awareness for the children’s charity. This brings Andy’s 2017 fundraising total to over £8,000.

Andy Ridout, Group Managing Director of Advance-TRS completed his third Ironman for children’s charity, Railway Children this past weekend Sunday.

Certainly an event not for the faint-hearted, an Ironman triathlon is comprised of a chilling 2.4-mile swim, followed by a 112-mile bicycle ride, finished off by a marathon (26.2-mile run), all of which must be completed within 17 hours. Ridout completed the monumental challenge in an incredible 11 hours 46 minutes.

Since establishing in 2011, giving back to those less fortunate and advancing others has been a central motivator for founder Andy Ridout and the growing Advance-TRS team. This is Ridout’s latest, in a string of extreme challenges he has taken on, to raise money and awareness for the children’s charity.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Next month Andy will take on his next challenge, climbing the world’s highest freestanding mountain to a height of 5,895m / 19,341f, Mount Kilimanjaro. It will also see him face one of his toughest trekking challenges with the final day involving 1,195m of ascent and 2,195m of descent.

Thank you for your support, all donations are greatly appreciated and mean a lot.

“Together, we can all advance.”

Andy Ridout, Group Managing Director of Advance-TRS has announced that he will take part in a double fundraising challenge, starting in August with the Copenhagen Ironman followed by a trek up the world’s highest freestanding mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Railway Children.

To date Andy has raised over £30,000 for the children’s charity, undertaking challenges including the Norseman Ironman, Mount Everest base camp trek, the Tour de Yorkshire and the London Marathon.

Railway Children is an international children’s charity that fights for vulnerable homeless children who live frightening lives on our streets, where they often become victims of abuse and exploitation.

“In India 11 million children live on the streets, in the UK 100,000 run away from home every year, often as a result of sexual abuse, neglect and violence. As a father of four myself, hearing some of the horror stories that these children live on a day-to-day basis is extremely harrowing. The innocence of children is a priceless commodity and one which is cruelly taken away by those who seek only to coerce and exploit,” says Andy. “For those of us who have children, it’s a cause that hits close to home as we often forget how unfortunate many other children are in this world.”

This year, in his quest to raise more funds and awareness he will be aim to complete two further challenges, once again pushing his body to the limit of physical endurance.

KMD Ironman Copenhagen

The KMD Ironman will see Andy once again take on an extreme triathlon challenge, swimming 3.8km, cycling 180km and then running a marathon through the city centre of Copenhagen.

The event will see its contestants swim the artificial lagoon at Amager Strandpark stretching 3.8km, an agonising 180 km bike ride through North Zealand with a mix of city centre, coastline and countryside, followed by a gruelling marathon through the Danish capital. The four-lap run course is a tourist attraction in itself passing the city’s historic and famous attractions, such as the Little Mermaid, Amalienborg Castle and New Harbor.

Kilimanjaro – Rongai Route

Standing at 5,895m/19,341ft, Kilimanjaro is the highest freestanding mountain in the world. Andy’s trek up the gargantuan mountain will utilise the Rongai Route from the northeastern side, passing alongside the border between Tanzania and Kenya.

Andy will trek through several different climate zones, before summiting on what is likely to be one of his toughest days trekking yet. He will then visit a Railway Children project at Mwanza to see at first hand what a difference your donations make.

This year’s Railway Ball was another huge success, raising over £449,000 for children’s charity Railway Children.

Advance-TRS were delighted to contribute over £1,600 to the total raised by successfully bidding on tickets in the charity auction.

Over 1,200 industry professionals attended the prestigious evening of entertainment and fundraising contributing to an incredible running total of over £5 million raised at the Railway Ball over the years.

Advance-TRS have a long standing relationship with Railway Children. Over the past 5 years, the team have raised over £30,000 through sporting challenges and activities to support children across the UK, India and East Africa who find themselves forced to leave homes that have become unbearable through poverty, abuse, violence and neglect.

In the UK alone, a child runs away from home every 5 minutes to live on the streets with nowhere else to go and nobody to turn to. Railway Children race to get to children before the streets get to them.

Most recently this September, Advance-TRS Marketing Director, Vicky Ridout joined a team of a team of 20 rail professionals in an 11-day expedition to climb to the summit of Mount Kenya and to raise money to provide shelter, food, clothing and medical supplies to vulnerable children at home and abroad.

This was a huge personal challenge for the mother of four as she scaled the 17,000ft mountain in 90 miles per hour winds and met with the street children supported by the charity; witnessing first hand the impact of living on the streets.

Operations Director Paul Merton, Managing Director Andy Ridout and Signalling Division Manager Sam Jennings each completed the 26.2-mile run following months of intensive training and preparation.

The guys joined around 38,000 other runners including Dame Kelly Holmes MBE and Top Gear’s Chris Evans at the marathon’s starting point on the 24th of April. The famous route sends runners-up to Woolwich and along the River Thames before circling the Isle of Dogs, looping back towards Westminster where the final stretch culminates at St James Park.

Managing Director, Andy Ridout ran in aid of Railway Children, the international children’s charity that aims to change the lives of children living on the streets of the UK, India and East Africa. Raising more than £6,400, Andy adds to an already impressive fundraising total, having raised money for the charity since 2011.

Paul and Sam both ran in aid of Action for Children, a UK-based charity that operates a number of different services for children and their families, ranging from intensive family support to fostering and adoption. Combined, the two raised more than £3,000 for Action for Children, an outstanding achievement.

Signalling recruiter Sam completed the marathon with the fastest time, clocking in at just under 4 hours. His incredible journey started last year when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in a game of Sunday football. After months of tireless recovery, Sam began training again and set a target to enter and complete the London Marathon in 2016.

“Admittedly,” says Sam “entering the race was the easy part. The reality quickly came crashing down once I began training 5 days a week at 6 am in freezing weather. I was also struggling with constant niggling injuries that hampered my rehabilitation. It’s been a tough road to recovery to get to where I am now but it’s all been well worth it to raise money for a worthwhile cause.”

“Together, we can all advance.”

Representatives from Advance Training & Recruitment Services were out in force at the Surrey Half Marathon this past weekend in preparation for the fast-approaching London Marathon in April.

Managing Director Andy Ridout, Operations Director Paul Merton and Lead Signalling Consultant Sam Jennings all took to Woking this past Sunday to run the Surrey Half Marathon, a 13.1 mile run starting at Woking, continuing up through Worplesdon towards Guildford before winding back down into Woking town centre.

The guys were in high spirits after crossing the finishing line having all recorded an impressive completion time.

Sam – 1 hour 42 minutes
Andy – 1 hour 55 minutes
Paul – 2 hours 5 minutes

Now all the hard work begins as the team sets their sights on the big one; the London Marathon. Paul, Sam and Andy will be joining around 38,000 other runners including Dame Kelly Holmes MBE and Top Gear’s Chris Evans on the 24th April for the annual spectacle through the heart of the British capital.

Starting at Blackheath, the route will take the advance-TRS team up to Woolwich and along the River Thames before circling the Isle of Dogs, looping back towards Westminster where the final stretch will see the boys completing the 26.2-mile course at St James Park.

Paul and Sam are both running for Action for Children, a British charity that operates a number of essential services aimed at aiding children and their families, from fostering and adoptions to working with families with disabled children.

Andy is running in aid of Railway Children, an international children’s charity that helps to protect vulnerable children and young adults living on the streets of the UK, India and East Africa. Andy previously raised more than £12,000 for Railway Children taking part in an Ironman triathlon in 2013.

“It’s been fantastic to see such a strong reaction throughout the office from team members who want to raise money for some magnificent causes,” says Sam Jennings. “It’s going to be a tough day on the 24th of April make no mistake but as a team, it’s something we’re all really relishing.”

The advance-TRS team hope to raise a combined total of £10,000 to help change the lives of vulnerable children across the globe. You can help make a difference to the lives of so many people today by making a small pledge at Sam, Andy and Paul’s fundraising pages.

“Together, we can all advance.”

It’s been a rollercoaster year for the rail industry. Mired by the pausing of numerous overpromised modernisation projects in the Midlands and the North of England, there was an air of uncertainty surrounding Network Rail’s capability to carry out all promised works in CP5. On the upside, we’ve witnessed the grand reopening of the remarkable Birmingham New Street station, the completion of the Reading station area redevelopment, whilst HS2 and Crossrail 2 have both made great leaps towards starting construction.

It’s also been an extraordinary year for rail recruitment specialists, advance-Training & Recruitment Services. The consultancy was recently shortlisted as a finalist for the coveted ‘Recruitment Excellence’ award at the 2016 UK Rail Industry Awards. The nomination came in the wake of advance’s continued commitment to reducing health and safety risks and incidents in the workplace.

The health and safety management system used by advance was recently OHSAS 18001 accredited by ACS Registrars. An OHSAS 18001 accredited safety management system enables advance to fully identify and control health and safety risks in the workplace; reducing the potential for future accidents and incidents.

The consultancy has also been awarded a five-star audit after receiving zero non-conformances for two successive years. RISQS is a pre-qualification scheme used by rail industry buyers to certify capable suppliers of products and services.

“We’re now coming off the back of a categorically outstanding year in 2015,” says managing director, Andy Ridout. “I’m delighted that we’re being recognised for providing services at the highest levels which we know is something our clients have come to expect in this industry. Everybody at advance has put in a huge amount of work within the last year and we’re all really looking forward to a running start in 2016.”

The Surrey-based recruitment consultancy now employs 23 full-time staff and has plans to grow the workforce up to more than 60 by 2019. Demand from clients has increased dramatically in the last year and turnover has increased more than 63% within that time.

In order to accommodate the increase in demand from clients, Advance has made an investment into a wider workspace and their team is currently in the process of moving into new offices more than twice the size of their current floor space.

Advance are now looking forward to an even busier 2016 and with multiple projects due to begin, it’s an exciting time to find a new career. Are you a talented rail professional looking for a new start this year? Advance Training & Recruitment Services are working with some of the biggest names in rail engineering on some of the UK’s most prestigious projects.

At a recent dinner organised by the Institution of Railway Signalling Engineers (IRSE) in Glasgow, Andy Ridout, managing director of advance Training & Recruitment Services took to the stage to help raise funds for the children’s charity, Railway Children.

Earlier this year, Ridout climbed to the base camp at Mount Everest in a gruelling 12-day expedition that saw the recruitment guru scale more than 60% up to the world’s highest peak. Prior to the excursion, diners at the IRSE’s Scottish section dinner put their hands into their pockets to the tune of £2,174 and this year they have been even more generous, raising more than £2,828.

If I Grow Up

Railway Children is an international children’s charity operating throughout the UK, India and East Africa. They fund outreach workers who seek out and gain the trust of children living on the streets, providing them with a safe place to stay whilst they work out the best long-term solution for them.

The charity has been selected as a partner for the UK Government’s prestigious UK Aid Match scheme, run by the Department for International Development (DfID). This scheme means that all donations received before the 22nd January 2016 will be matched pound for pound.

The charity is aiming to raise £300,000 before this date, which the government will double to £600,000 to help twice as many children. Ridout’s fundraising of £2,828 will be aid-matched to £5,656 along with added Gift Aid of £645 taking the total fundraising up to £6,301!

Next September, advance-TRS’ very own marketing director, Vicky Turner will be climbing to the peak at Mount Kenya in aid of Railway Children. You can find out more about Vicky’s journey at her fundraising page at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/advanceTRS

The entire team from Advance Training & Recruitment Services took to London this September to ascend The O2 in celebration of another successful sales quarter.

At the highest point of the dome, The O2 stands 170 feet tall and features an incline and decline of up to 30 degrees; that’s three times as steep as the sharpest climb at this year’s Tour de France! The entire climb took around 90 minutes to complete, including a 20-minute break at the top where the team could take in the splendour of the London skyline at sunset.

The O2 climb comes off the back of an impressive quarter in which Advance’s consultants successfully hit their sales target in impressive fashion. An incredible amount of hard work has been put into pulling off this feat and the team is already well on their way to hitting the target for the next quarter.

Reflecting on the climb, managing director Andy Ridout said “It was a fantastic way to celebrate a very successful first three months of the financial year. I’m elated to see the direction the company is going in as we continue to grow financially and expand our team to help cope with the increase in demand.”

Year-on-year contract revenue at the consultancy has increased by 55% whilst permanent revenue has also seen a rise of 48% this year. Further to their sales success in the last quarter, Advance also achieved ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 accreditation and made it into the Recruitment International Top 500 report for 2015.

Rail recruitment specialists, Advance Training & Recruitment Services have successfully achieved ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 certification; a major milestone for the consultancy.

Almost a year’s worth of hard work has been put into the development of the company’s policies and procedures in order to continually improve the service and value offered to its clients and candidates.

ISO 9001 is the globally recognised hallmark for robust quality management systems, designed to help organisations successfully meet the needs of their various stakeholders. The certification signifies a responsibility for providing outstanding business practices, excellent customer service and improved operational performance.

OHSAS 18001 is a framework for occupational health and safety management systems which exhibits Advance-TRS’ continued focus on workplace health & safety. This accreditation certifies that Advance-TRS has a system in place to fully identify and control health and safety risks in the workplace; reducing the potential for future accidents and illnesses whilst demonstrating due diligence to its clients.

“We are delighted to have been awarded ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 certification after months of hard work from everyone here at Advance-TRS. We are always looking for ways in which to further develop and improve our service offering to both our candidates and clients and these awards will go a long way to demonstrating that,” says Operations Director, Paul Merton.

“Our team is dedicated to providing a first-class recruitment service and these awards will help formalise the ‘client-first’ approach that we are so proud to offer.”

Carried out by ACS Registrars, one of the UK’s premier certification bodies, the extensive assessment required Advance-TRS to pass a stringent review of their policies, procedures and processes.

In the last year, Advance-TRS also successfully achieved a maximum 4-star RISQS accreditation and became a fully-audited member of APSCo, the Association of Professional Staffing Companies. These accreditations illustrate the importance advance-TRS puts on safety and compliance, whilst ensuring they remain at the forefront of recruitment excellence.

“It’s a really exciting time for Advance-TRS given our extraordinary growth over the last few years and the strides we are making in improving what goes on behind the scenes,” says Merton.

The mega-triathlon fundraising campaign heated up this past week when Andy Ridout, Managing Director of advance-TRS took to the stage at the UK Rail Industry Awards. Ridout made an impassioned plea to more than 800 rail professionals, calling for them to ‘dig deep’ and donate.

Hundreds of guests donated generously towards the campaign and by the close of the night, more than £4,800 worth of donations had been raised; a fantastic achievement!

The UK Rail Industry Awards is an annual spectacle aimed at recognising exceptional contributions to the industry over the past twelve months. Founded by Rail Technology Magazine, the awards boasted a keynote speech from Peter Wilkinson, managing director of passenger services at TfL and a video-link message from Baroness Kramer, minister of state for transport.

“It is a testament to the generosity and integrity of the industry, that everyone was able come together and raise such a substantial amount of money for what is an outstanding cause,” says Andy.

“I am incredibly grateful to Rail Technology Magazine for helping provide a platform for us all to make a difference to the lives of thousands of children worldwide.”

Back in November in 2014, Ridout inspired members of the Institution of Railway Signalling Engineers in Glasgow to donate more than £2,212 to the campaign. The current fundraising total now sits at an impressive £7,542 and is still rapidly rising.

Andy jets out to Nepal on the 13th of March to climb to the base camp at Mount Everest. Andy and company will hike more than 113km up and down Everest in a trek that will take around 12 days to complete. Everest Base Camp is the famous camping plain that sits at 15,575ft above sea level, almost two-thirds of the way up the world’s highest summit.

Then in June, Andy will be cycling the Wiggle Dragon ride, undertaking the maximum distance option aptly named the Dragon Devil. The challenge will see Andy cycling a thigh burning 302 kilometres through mountainous South Wales. The length of the challenge is only half of the problem however, as the route requires approximately 3,437 metres of climbing with a maximum elevation of around 530m.

To cap it off, Andy will boldly swim the length of the Loch Ness at the tail end of 2015. The Loch Ness swim is approximately 23 miles in length, taking around 11-12 hours to swim in water as low as 7 degrees Celsius!

There is still time to donate, simply visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AndyRidout.

Advance Training & Recruitment Services, the rail industry’s recruitment experts, are proud to have achieved Achilles RISQS certification (formerly known as Link-Up), enabling the consultancy to supply the rail industry with skilled engineers and construction contractors.

RISQS is the rail industry’s supplier registration and qualification scheme. Suppliers are required to undergo a rigorous pre-qualification and auditing process, qualifying them to more than a hundred industry buyers including Network Rail and Transport for London (TfL).

Advance-TRS were awarded a 4-star passing grade by Achilles, the highest possible grade for an organisation in the primary year of the new audit scheme. Now in it’s fourth year of trading, the Surrey-based rail recruitment consultancy turns over in excess of £7 million per year and employs an experienced team of 15 staff.

“This is an excellent achievement for the company in a year where both the RISQS and Rail Sentinel schemes have undergone significant changes” says Operations Director, Paul Merton. “We were delighted to have become members of APSCo earlier in 2014 and we now move into 2015 with a robust focus on operational safety and compliance with an aim to have achieved ISO 9001 and ISO 18001 accreditation by the end of the first quarter.”

Andy Ridout, managing director of Advance Training & Recruitment Services, has announced that he will take part in a trifecta of fundraising challenges in 2015, starting in March with a trek to the base camp at Mount Everest in aid of Railway Children.

In little over a year, Andy has managed to raise more than £13,500 as a result of his impressive Ironman victory in late 2013 and the Tour de Yorkshire sporting event, cycling the first stage of the Tour de France with colleague Paul Merton. The recruitment chief is now determined to add to that remarkable tally and aims to raise more than £6,500 in 2015, topping the grand total up to an extraordinary £20,000.

As well as climbing up Everest, Andy plans on cycling a thigh-burning 302 kilometres through mountainous Welsh countryside in an event aptly dubbed the ‘Dragon Devil’ in June, whilst late 2015 will see Andy relay swimming through the English Channel for Cancer Research UK; a year long mega-triathlon!

Following TV’s Brian Blessed at this year’s Roundhouse networking event dinner, Andy delivered a rousing speech on behalf of Railway Children, urging rail executives from across the industry to join him in a once in a lifetime excursion in aid of an incredible cause.

Resting at 17,575ft above sea level, Everest’s Base Camp is the famous camping plain with breathtaking views of the Nepalese Himalayas. The expedition is expected to take around 12 days to complete, with Andy and company trekking more than 113 kilometres.

A previous expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro organised by Railway Children raised more than £194,000 and it is hoped that next year’s total will be even higher.

Railway Children is an international children’s charity that works to reach homeless children on the streets of the UK, East Africa and India. In the UK alone, a child runs away from home every five minutes, forced to flee as a result of poverty, abuse, violence or neglect. ‘That’s a frightening statistic that requires immediate attention’ says Andy.

‘As a father of four myself, hearing some of the horror stories that these children live on a day-to-day basis is extremely harrowing. The innocence of children is a priceless commodity and one which is cruelly taken away by those who seek only to coerce and exploit. For those of us who have children, it’s a cause that hits close to home as we often forget how unfortunate many other children are in this world.’

Andy was recently nominated for the coveted ‘David Maidment Award for Charity’ at this year’s RailStaff Awards, by Dave Ellis, corporate partnerships manager at Railway Children. His nomination came as a result of the continued fundraising
and awareness that he has generated for the charity over the past few years, namely from the Ironman which created a huge amount of buzz throughout the industry.

‘I’m delighted to have become a finalist for this prestigious award two years running now. We are very proud of our corporate partnership with Railway Children and will continue fundraising and generating awareness wherever and whenever we can.’

Andy’s determination and commitment is evident for all to see. His rail recruitment and training consultancy, Advance-TRS, now turns over in excess of £5 million per year, recruiting 20 in-house staff at its new Guildford-based headquarters. ‘We are now working very closely with the industry’s biggest contractors on the UK’s biggest projects; I’m extremely excited for what we have planned in 2015 and relish the challenges that lie ahead.’

Andy will be carrying a giant banner to the base camp at Everest. There are limited sponsorship opportunities to add your company’s logo to this banner and have it proudly lifted 17,000ft high in the Himalayas.

Photographs of Andy holding the banner will be used in numerous press releases, social media and e-mail marketing campaigns, so it is a fantastic opportunity to benefit from some great PR whilst saving the lives of children worldwide.

This month, a team from Advance-TRS successfully raced the route of the first stage of the Tour de France to raise money for Railway Children.

Sunday 13th of July saw Managing Director, Andy Ridout and Operations Director, Paul Merton swap suits and mobile phones for Lycra and sports bottles, as the duo successfully completed the 120-mile Tour de Yorkshire sportive in support of Railway Children, raising more than £650 for the esteemed children’s charity.

Railway Children is an international children’s charity that aims to support children who run away from home to live on the dangerous streets of our towns and cities. In the UK alone, a child runs away from home every five minutes, that’s 100,000 children under 16 a year.

Merton and Ridout joined 160 other cyclists at the start line at Ilkley, Yorkshire early Sunday morning before setting off on the turn-by-turn recreation of the first stage of the Tour de France. The challenging route circles up and around the breathtaking Yorkshire Dales and includes a torturous 9,924ft ascent just to ensure those thighs were burning!

“It was easily the most challenging thing I’ve ever had to do,” commented Merton. “It really puts into perspective, the sheer energy and determination required by those currently cycling the complete 21 stage route.”

The charity expects to have raised over £30,000 from the event, which will go straight towards helping fund outreach projects for children in India, East Africa and the UK. These projects provide shelter, food, clothing, medical supplies, education and counselling to thousands of children in these at-risk areas.

“Railway Children is a fantastic charity and we will continue doing whatever we can to raise money and awareness for this great cause,” commented Ridout. “There are already plans in the pipeline for ways to raise even more towards the tail end of 2014 and beyond.”

The Advance-TRS team has so far managed to raise more than £650 for the children’s charity but there is still time to donate to this fantastic cause. Visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/advanceTRS today and donate whatever you can to help improve the lives of children across the globe.

Niche railway recruitment specialists, Advance Training & Recruitment Services, has secured a plethora of electrification and civils vacancies for the National Electrification Programme.

The seven-year programme aims to electrify more than two thousand miles of railway at a cost of more than £2 billion. In addition, a further £2 billion is being invested into accompanying civils upgrades which include gauge clearances, new platforms and footbridges, alongside refurbishments at various stations.

The NEP is just a part of the government’s ambitious efforts to electrify more than half of Britain’s railways by 2021. Once completed, the electrified lines will help stimulate economic growth by improving connections between towns and cities, with more journeys, faster trains and a vastly reduced impact on the environment.

Says James Culshaw, Senior Electrification Consultant at advance-TRS, ‘The National Electrification Programme is a fantastic investment into the UK’s ageing rail infrastructure that will provide more train services that can run faster, quieter and far more efficiently. Along with HS2 and Crossrail, an electric railway will be an excellent showcase for the UK as a premier economy with a world-class transport infrastructure.’

Senior Electrification and Civils consultants, James Culshaw and Daniel Forth-Rumley are looking to speak directly to OLE and Civils Project Managers and Project Engineers about long-term contract and permanent opportunities on various NEP projects.

It has been little over 8 months since Andy Ridout, Managing Director of Advance Training & Recruitment Services, undertook one of the most challenging trials known to athletes worldwide, the Ironman Triathlon. Back in September of 2013, Ridout endured a 2.4 mile swim through icy freshwater, a testing 110-mile cycle, followed by an agonising marathon across the strenuous Dartmoor terrain; it was a challenge that tested his endurance, courage and determination to the very limit.

His efforts weren’t without recognition however, as Andy rallied supporters from across the rail industry and beyond to raise a substantial total of £12,777, an amount that eclipsed his original target of £10,000. Presenting his final fundraising total with a cheque at the Dinner at the Derby Roundhouse, Andy joined hundreds from within the Rail industry in raising in excess of £85,000 for Railway Children.

Not to be one to rest on his laurels, Ridout is back once again and this time he’s joined by Operations Director, Paul Merton as they begin their vigorous training to compete in the Tour de Yorkshire, a road by road recreation of the first stage of the Tour de France, aptly named ‘Le Grande Départ’. The Tour de Yorkshire, organised in association with Railway Children, is a 120-mile route starting in Ilkley, circling up and through the breath-taking Yorkshire dales before finishing back in Ilkley, having endured a tortuous 9,294ft ascent.

The daring duo hope to raise more than £1,000 for Railway Children, the international children’s charity aimed at helping children that are forced to live out on the streets. In the UK alone, a child runs away from home every 5 minutes, forced to flee as a result of abject poverty, violence and neglect. The money generously raised by those in the rail industry has gone towards staffing teams that seek to help children on the streets, providing survival kits, as well as sending health volunteers with medicine and first aid equipment to India’s most exploited regions.

“Presenting a cheque for £12,777 to Railway Children at the Derby Roundhouse last year was one of my proudest moments” says Ridout, “So much work had gone into training as well as fundraising in the months leading up to the event and to be able to say that we smashed that £10,000 target was a real honour. Now the hard work starts all over again, make no mistake, the Tour de Yorkshire will be no easy feat but it is one that we are thoroughly relishing.”

With station usage growing year on year, the rail industry is pushing ahead with dynamic programmes of station redevelopments and refurbishments. Part of the £37.5 billion spending plan, the biggest rail improvement program since the Victorian era, makes provisions for the replacement of 300,000 square metres of platforms as well as ambitious projects at London Bridge, Birmingham New Street, Manchester Victoria and Reading.

The Office of Rail Regulation estimates that there were 2.54 billion entries and exits at railway stations between 2012 and 2013, an increase of 82 million on the previous year. This is a huge footfall. Add to this a growth in demand for rail services of 5-6% per year and the urgency of the task of dealing with future growth emerges.

Open and accessible station design

For instance at Reading station by 2030 passenger numbers are anticipated to double to 30 million a year. The £850m redevelopment has helped create a further five platforms and facilitate extensions to the existing platforms. Another attempt to ease the bustling crowds and the expected increase in passengers is the use of open and accessible station design.

Upon approaching Reading station, you would be hard pressed to believe that it’s not an airport terminal. The work being undertaken by Network Rail and Costain truly deserves recognition. The new 30 metre wide, 110-metre long bridge is a far cry from the previous span, providing an open, spacious means of moving between platforms, complete with effective signage and information systems for optimal passenger flow.

However, station redevelopments have gone further than just easing overcrowding and improving signage. Local government and its constituents are increasingly demanding architectural wonders that their town or city can be especially proud of. With HS2 looking likely to go ahead in 2017, cities in the north plan to take full advantage. What better way to make your mark than with a railway station of international acclaim.

Waheed Nazir, director of planning and regeneration at Birmingham City council recently claimed that Birmingham would not accept the ‘boxy and basic’ station design for the Birmingham Curzon Street HS2 station that was outlined in the HS2 Phase One Environmental Statement.

The new proposals for the station, which have been designed in-house by Nazir’s design team at Birmingham City Council, are intended to deliver a station of an ‘international standard’. Nazir is hoping that the funding shortfall expected in pursuing their own revised designs can be topped up with funding from the local council and local businesses.

Birmingham New Street station itself is a project that is staking its claim to be a station of international acclaim. Gone is the dreary, brutalist exposed concrete architectural design of the old station in favour of a sleek curved exterior that mirrors the more modern aesthetic of the Birmingham city centre. London Bridge, Reading and the proposals for Glasgow Queen Street, answer passengers and local community aspirations for railway stations that will make their city competitive and desirable to potential investors.

Multi-purpose hubs

Some railway stations have also transitioned into new roles as multipurpose hubs complete with high-end retail outlets and casual and smart dining restaurants. These stations offer passengers more than just a journey; opening up multiple alternative lucrative revenue streams for station operators. Sales figures show that growth in retail sales from Network Rail stations grew 7.8% in like-for-like sales between September and December in 2013 in contrast to a paltry 0.6% growth for high street retail outlets. It’s easy to see then, why station operators have begun looking at alternative ways of generating income that can ultimately be reinvested back into improving the railway.

The results of such an experiment are already clear to see if you look at the example set by St Pancras railway station. After an £800m refurbishment that was completed in 2007, St Pancras became an international rail nucleus complete with high-end retail outlets, restaurants and cafés as well as Europe’s longest champagne bar.

With Network Rail expanding its retail operations in stations such as London Victoria, Waterloo and Reading, as well as trialling a package collection service at mainline stations, it’s clear to see that railway stations are becoming more than just the inception and completion of our daily commute. Stations are quickly becoming central hubs that are essential to the growth of many local economies around the country. The task for contractors now is to strike a perfect balance between aesthetic design and functional design whilst also making provisions for various other opportunities that can offer local economic benefits.

In light of the recent developments in the electrification sector with Network Rail agreeing £2 billion worth of framework contracts with Balfour Beatty, AmeyInabensa, CarillionPowerlines and ABC Electrification, it is reasonable to argue that the UK is beginning to establish a railway system that is faster, cleaner and much more
efficient.

These six framework contracts are just a part of around 30 different electrification projects that the government has green-lighted for the next seven years. These framework agreements seek to electrify 2,000 miles of track between 2014 and 2019, a significant investment that will create a more sustainable railway.

However, we estimate that by 2016, the electrification sector will require upwards of 2,000 skilled linesmen to carry out the works, more than 10 times the current capacity. The UK now faces an uphill struggle to recruit and train over 1,800 electrification linesmen before 2016. One of the biggest concerns that we are experiencing with regards to establishing a skilled workforce in the UK rail industry is the relatively lengthy breaks between large-scale projects. These breaks inevitably lead to a reduction in demand for specialist skilled workers, most notably within Electrification and Signalling.

Unfortunately as a result, we commonly see capacity problems arise when large-scale projects are initiated and the industry’s demand begins to far outweigh the supply. In disciplines such as Signalling and Electrification, there isn’t a direct transferability of skills that enables technicians to easily transfer between roles. Those looking to make the switch to the electrification sector are still required to complete specialist training in order to be qualified enough to work.

We are also dealing with an ageing workforce with many high-level qualified technicians expected to retire over the next few years, further threatening the sustainability of future electrification works.

One solution to the skills shortage is to source skilled linesmen from other countries such as Poland, Slovakia and The Philippines. Many European countries have a much higher ratio of electrified track to the UK and have thus created a highly skilled workforce that will soon be in big demand.

However, sourcing technicians from foreign countries doesn’t necessarily address the long-term issues that the UK rail industry has in terms of maintaining a highly skilled workforce. With youth unemployment in the UK reaching close to 20%, could there be a better solution right on our doorstep?

We should be looking at supporting organisations that aim to fill the various skills gaps that exist within the industry, most notably the partnership between Carillion and SPL Powerlines. The partnership was set up ahead of the Network Rail framework contracts agreement and aims to significantly reduce the deficit in skilled linesmen over the next 6 years by investing heavily in purpose-built electrification training centres.

Another organisation that deserves recognition is the UK Rail Industry Training Trust, a charity set up to reach out to 12-19 year-olds across the UK to promote careers in the rail industry. The trust is currently running a series of engagement and educational events around the country, promoting the types of careers available within the rail industry.

Vocational education
There also needs to be a shift in attitudes towards careers in the trades as it recently emerged that youngsters are being actively dissuaded away from vocational education in favour of more academic pursuits. According to a recent study by the Edge Foundation, 36% of students who studied a vocational qualification were advised against it by their school. Only 51% of parents encouraged their child’s choice to study a vocational qualification, compared to 74% of parents who were happy to encourage an academic pursuit. This poses another dilemma for the rail and construction industries despite evidence showing that the total income of an ex-apprentice is not too dissimilar to that of a university graduate.

As the UK commits to constructing a 21st century fast, safe and green railway, we must not ignore the continual demand for qualified and experienced technicians and engineers. It is essential that we are continually inspiring the next generation of railway engineers as these future stars will be the ones building the large-scale projects such as HS2 and Crossrail 2.

With over 450 industry professionals in regular attendance, the dinner at the Derby Roundhouse is perhaps the most prestigious networking event of the rail calendar.

As well as providing an annual opportunity for business leaders and key industry decision makers to meet, it has since 2012 become an invaluable fundraising hub for Railway Children.

Last years’ event saw Andy Ridout of rail recruitment company, advance Training and Recruitment Services (advance-TRS) announce his personal challenge, a challenge that would see him endure a freshwater swim of 2.4 miles, an agonising 110 mile bike ride, followed by a gruelling marathon across the hilly terrain of Dartmoor, all in all, an ironman. In aid of Railway Children, he aimed to raise a staggering £10,000 whilst inspiring others to step forward and support him on his journey to end child neglect. The Roundhouse provided a perfect reception for his announcement; that night Ridout raised £3,700 towards his target.

One year on and it seems that ‘Ironman Andy’ as he has become known has completed his journey in more ways than one. Since last year the dinner at the Roundhouse helped raise in excess of £85,000 for Railway Children, with Andy having personally raised a staggering £12,777 towards that total.

We recently caught up with the man himself, he spoke frankly about the race that pushed him to his limit.

‘It has been an emotional twelve months’ says Andy, who celebrated his 41st birthday two days after completing the race. The training was definitely tough with many obstacles along the way, not least the back injury that almost meant pulling out at the last minute.’

‘On the morning of the Ironman, I was filled with excitement and apprehension and was very much looking forward to the swim, my favourite of the three activities (unfortunately the shortest too). There is nothing more sobering than entering a lake as the sun rises, the sky was clear and the red glow as the sun came up was magnificent. The atmosphere on the lake side was buzzing and everyone was in high spirits. In such events, there is a feeling of unity and camaraderie amongst the contestants and everyone is really encouraging of one another.’

‘The swim was exhilarating but as I mounted my bike the excitement and fear of what lay ahead were consuming. I had a very sore back and was conscious of the impact the hilly terrain may have, it didn’t take long for my fears to be confirmed; the 3rd mile of the 110 was a mile long climb which induced exceptional muscle tightening, after that I’m not sure how I managed to persevere but somehow I kept going.’

‘The views during the ride were magnificent and I was filled with a spectrum of emotions ranging from determination to frustration, to adrenaline fuelled excitement as I descended at speeds of up to 40mph. On the 109th mile, I had a sudden sense of humour failure; the race owners having decided to put the finish at the top of a 40% hill! However, I was on the home stretch and as I pushed towards the cycling finish line I felt a combination of relief and immense satisfaction. Unfortunately, my feelings of relief lasted all of 2 minutes as my attention was turned to the moors and the marathon that lay ahead. By this point my back was in agony and I was mentally drained, but I had got so far and pulling out was not an option; even if it meant walking 26 miles I knew I had to cross that finish line.’

‘The run was spectacular, the views breathtaking. Every few miles I grew in confidence and relaxed into a routine of running for 4 or 5 miles and then eating and drinking to keep my energy levels going. At sun set I happened to be at the highest point of the moors and the view was incredibly inspiring, from this I drew encouragement and pushed on to complete the final 10 miles.’

‘Crossing the finish line was extraordinarily satisfying and emotional; it was the end of a 12-month race.’

‘I would like to say a special thank you to everyone who has helped support me on my journey to the finish line, the industry’s response to my efforts have been overwhelming and the £12,777 raised for Railway Children has been well worthwhile.’

The signalling recruitment team at Advance-TRS has proposed a new mentorship programme.

Managers at Advance-TRS hope the Signalling Mentorship programme will see between 60 and 100 Testing Engineers achieve fully qualified IRSE Licence tester status within 12 months.

Says Daniel Forth-Rumley, Recruitment Consultant at Advance-TRS, ‘It struck me that a vast amount of engineers have completed the testing courses, but still struggle to get the required mentorship opportunity to step up their testing grades.’

Daniel went on, ‘When approached, the majority of engineers jumped at the opportunity to join a programme offering consistent mentorship and employment, in return for the commitment to work critical bank holiday periods.’

Whilst signalling is just one of the key areas of concern, Network Rail’s openness to invest and support possible solutions is welcome news. It is, however, essential that this message runs deeper than the senior management.

It remains a continual frustration for many of the principal contractors around the country that supply chain Testers in Charge (TIC) and Test & Commissioning Managers are reluctant to approve signal test plans that contain IRSE Licensed test engineers who are listed as working under mentorship. It is a vicious circle and without the empowerment to use the aspiring trainee testers to gain the essential mentorship required, the problem will only magnify.

Alongside the High Speed Two project, Great Western electrification and Crossrail, Europe’s biggest construction project, there will be major work taking place to implement new signalling technology as the industry progresses an ambitious programme to replace most of the current line side signals with in-cab technology.

Signalling is a critical discipline within the rail industry and with the ageing workforce signalling delivery has a daunting challenge ahead. For example, the Christmas commissioning period often shows up the critical shortfall of signal test engineers. With eight weeks to go rail chiefs remain concerned.

Andy Ridout, managing director of Advance-TRS feels it is imperative to fill this skills shortage. Network Rail and its principal contractors are to be commended and encouraged as they work towards increased graduate and skilled recruitment programmes as well as investing in training, conversion programmes and mentorship schemes.

To hear more about the testing mentorship programme or simply to share your view on the issue face within the rail recruitment sector, email Advance-TRS at info@advance-trs.com or contact Andy Ridout on 01483 361061.

“It has been an emotional twelve months,” says Andy Ridout, who will celebrate his 41st birthday two days after completing the Ironman race. “The training has definitely been tough with many obstacles along the way, but here we are with just two weeks to go and I’m starting to wind down. The next couple of weeks will be all about the tapering period; resting my muscles, rejuvenating sports massages and keeping hydrated to ensure that my body is in top condition on the day. ”

In case you haven’t heard, Andy Ridout, Managing Director of advance Training and Recruitment Services will be competing in Dartmoor’s Horseman Ironman on 14th September. The event that will see him withstand a 2.4-mile swim, a 108-mile cycle followed by a marathon across high gradients will raise around £10,000 for Railway Children, the charity that helps street children across the UK, India and Africa.

Andy explains, ‘I entered the race for two reasons; to raise money for a very worthwhile charity and for the physical challenge. I met with Dave Ellis of Railway Children who really impressed me; I wanted to do something beyond the norm to help him raise awareness as well as a decent amount of money.

Andy’s whole demeanour exudes determination and it’s clear that his main strength is his outstanding ability to keep going no matter what, a quality that has been reflected throughout his 16-year recruitment career, however, like most athletes, Andy’s journey has been awash with up’s and down’s.

‘I am really looking forward to the race, it has been a long hard road getting to this point and I’m filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension.’ ‘A lot of my dedication to training is led by fear of pain during the race, the event is won and lost in the year leading up to it, not on the day, if you don’t train hard enough it’s over before you’ve begun.’

‘My hope for the day is simply to complete the race without injury or mechanical issues!’ Said Andy, The race can take between 12 and 16 hours depending on fitness and luck on the day. Andy admits that his journey to the Ironman has been a long road, evoking many dilemmas along the way; ‘I have had to invest heavily in planning my life in order to balance family, work and training commitments, I haven’t always got it right but have learnt a great deal along the way. I am lucky enough to have an incredibly supportive family and have learned that balance is the key to a full life.’

‘I have to say I feel fantastic in my health and body, exercise gives you a clear mind and energy to approach each day and its challenges. I truly believe that with focus and dedication everyone can achieve their goals if they truly aspire to meet them.’

‘After the event, I will be looking forward to a number of things. My main priority will be the birth of my much-anticipated baby who is due 14th Nov. My partner has been a rock for twelve months and she is long overdue some attention, especially being 7 months pregnant!
Andy will be announcing his fundraising grand total on 10th October at the annual Dinner at the Roundhouse event where he will be presenting a cheque to Railway Children!

There is still time to support Andy and help him reach his £10,000 target, to do so you can visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AndyRidout  or TEXT Rail99 followed by £2, £5 or £10 to 70070.

“Together we can end child exploitation.”

At a time when many businesses are struggling, it is imperative that employers are equipped to source the staff who will provide the best return on investment. However, many continue to get it wrong, costing them a small fortune.

Victoria Turner asks Andy Ridout, Managing Director of rail Recruitment Company, advance-TRS why businesses are so often failing in their selection strategies and how top talent can be retained.

“Your employees will be your most valuable asset. In most cases they will also be your greatest cost, so the first step to success is hiring the right people,” Commented Ridout.

Ridout believes that successful candidate selection requires the employer to be precise about what a role actually involves. It is important to understand exactly what will be expected of a candidate before you can ascertain the type of employee you are looking for.

Do you need an individual who others can be lead and motivated by? If so, ensure that the questions you ask during the interview allow the candidate to not only demonstrate their knowledge and qualifications but to express the personal characteristics of a successful leader.

Training specialist Monique Choudhuri, Head of Training and Development at advance-TRS has built up a 25-year portfolio of blue chip clients including British Airways, BSkyB and Fircroftand and is only too familiar with the staffing problems most companies face.

Monique explained, “For a business to flourish, every employer should understand the psychology behind interviewing, as well as the various techniques that can be applied to identify the strongest candidates in the talent pool.”
So, once you have perfected your interview methods and have applied them accordingly you can sit back and enjoy the fruits of your new employee’s labour, right? Wrong!

According to Monique, it is at this stage that employers are lulled into a false sense of security, often causing the most expensive mistakes to be made.

Companies are increasingly guilty of failing to get the most from their staff. In some sectors, 43% of employees complain of lacking opportunity for growth. This not only means that their potential remains unrealised but that they are more likely to leave.

Advance Training and Recruitment Services offer their clients consistent training, personal development plans and mentoring, all part of a client retention strategy designed to develop an employee’s most valuable assets, boost company morale and maximise productivity. Surely this is an investment which no business can afford to be without?

“Together, we can all advance.”

Summer is on the horizon- time to dust off the sunnies and stash the winter boots, time for change, time for a new career?

With the summer months approaching there is no better time to consider your options when it comes to your employment. Whether you’re searching for a salary increase to help fund that perfect summer holiday, a role closer to home or simply a change of direction, specialist railway recruiters Advance-TRS are here to assist every step of the way.

Step 1.

Know exactly which sector you want to work in, how far you are prepared to travel, whether you want permanent or temporary employment and the salary or rate you are prepared to accept.

If you are unsure of anything such as your market value then talk to a recruitment expert in your sector.

Step 2.

Search for specialist recruiters in your industry. These specialists will have relationships with the key companies and employers; as well as live jobs that are ready to be filled.

advance-TRS are specialist railway recruiters with a combined experience of over 40 years, they are preferred suppliers to the majority of employers within the rail sector and will undoubtedly have contacts within the companies you wish to be considered by.

Big online job boards can be useful, however, many allow a multitude of agencies to have access to your CV. This can result in mass CV mailshots by inexperienced recruiters to unsuitable employers, a fact that could tarnish your professional integrity.

Step 3.

Prepare your CV in case a role becomes immediately available.

Remember, you must be able to support the statements made in your CV, avoid unnecessary exaggeration as untruths will probably come to light during reference checks.

And finally…

Ensure that your Facebook settings are set to private! Employers use social media to check up on candidates so any lurid pictures and expletives should be deleted and your LinkedIn profile kept up to date.

“Together, we can all advance.”

The man everyone’s talking about, Andy Ridout, Managing Director of advance Training and Recruitment Services (advance-TRS), is storming towards his fundraising target of £10,000. As previously reported, the driven Recruitment guru will be embarking on his second Ironman challenge this September, in honour of the charity Railway Children. Having already raised a staggering £7,221.00 Andy looks set to make a big difference to the cause that improves the lives thousands of young people each year.

In the UK 100,000 children run away annually, their disappearance often goes unreported. William, aged 14 was one such child. Having been subjected to neglect by his mother, a drug addict, William had no bedroom, had never been to school and was surrounded by substance abusers on a daily basis.

Three weeks after he left home, he was noticed by a concierge who put him in touch with Aberlour, the young runaway service supported by Railway Children. Homeless, hungry and withdrawn William was given a place to stay and began to reveal himself as an articulate and kind young man. William began attending school and is now training as an apprentice.

There are thousands more children like William across the UK, many run away in an attempt to escape, violence, physical or sexual abuse and neglect at home. They are forced to sleep rough on the streets, unnoticed and uncared for, often ‘dropping out’ of society altogether. Railway Children helps to provide safe places for these young people.

Children’s Services Manager, Laura Irvine has been working closely with the charity for the past 10 years. She commented,

“So many young people are overlooked; children must feel safe, loved and secure in order to become the adults we need in our society. If we ignore our young people it is us who will be responsible for the adults they become. Children are our future and must be nurtured”

Clare was 14 when her mum told her she didn’t want her anymore.

“It all started to go wrong when my mum and dad split up,” she explained. “Mum was out all the time leaving me alone with me younger brother. She would arrive home drunk and play music really loud. We usually had to stay up at night to look after her.”

Despite being kept up late, Clare and her brother were expected to get up for school, her mum would get angry and hit them when they said they were tired. At school they were usually in no fit state to learn, would fight and get into trouble.

The day her mum told her to leave, Clare went to school as usual, and then to her dad’s house.

“I got a phone call from my mum saying to come and pick my clothes up. When we got to the house all my clothes were in bags outside”

Clare’s dad was supportive but worked long hours and had to leave the house early. Gradually she began associating with the wrong people, not going to school, and staying out at night.

“Sometimes I’d come home in the early hours of the morning and sometimes I wouldn’t come back at all.”

Eventually, Clare’s dad became worried and reported her missing to the police. As a result, she was referred to the local runaway project and was allocated a key worker funded by Railway Children.

The key worker built up a relationship with Clare and worked on her self-esteem and coping strategies through getting her involved with positive activities. As a result Clare’s self-esteem has increased. Her attendance at school has risen from 60% to 92%, she no longer runs away or gets into trouble with the police and she wants to work with young people as a career.

In a society that claims to offer equal opportunities, it is ironic that so many children are ignored, forgotten and allowed to slip through the net into poverty and abuse. According to Laura the economic downturn has, without a doubt, seen the situation become worse. Many families are breaking down due to financial stresses, resulting in a higher percentage of ‘at risk’ children.

A spokesperson for Railway Children commented “There are many things that can be done to ease the pressure for families. People need safe places across the country that can offer support free of judgement”

Andy is doing all he can to help the Railway Children and is training hard to ensure that his target is reached.

“I have been running 6 miles to work and home every day” he explained. “I will be entering the Reading Half Marathon in March, The London Marathon in April, The Windsor Triathlon in June, and other smaller events in between. It is my aim to get everybody involved in what I’m doing, whether it be by coming along to offer support, donating, or entering yourself!”

“All children are innocent, just like yours and mine and their vulnerability is very real. I believe that we as individuals, the rail industry and society all have a responsibility to help young people reach their potential.”

You can follow Andy’s progress in the race to beat child neglect and poverty by visiting his fundraising page at www.advance-trs.com contacting him directly on 01483 361 061 or donate to the cause at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AndyRidout

“Together we can put an end to the exploitation of innocence.”

In January last year, the government announced plans to build High Speed 2 – a high-speed railway line set to be constructed in two parts. Initially, the route will link London to Birmingham, dramatically reducing passenger journey time. The second phase of the high-speed development will then transform the route into the form of a “Y” shape- splitting the line in two directions, one continuing from Birmingham to Manchester Piccadilly via Crewe and Manchester Airport and the other from Birmingham to Leeds via East Midlands and Sheffield.

In recent years, many feel that rail industry contractors and consultancies have been apprehensive and unwilling to invest in staff training and full-time hires due to short term contracts and lack of confidence in long-term workloads. HS2 could be set to solve this.

The new line is estimated to cost around £30billion and will be completed by 2032, it’s commissioning along with substantial government investment in cross rail and other national electrification projects such as ‘The electric spine’ lay testament to the government’s continued commitment & confidence in the booming rail industry, a fact which will no doubt boost many rail companies faith when it comes to investing in permanent recruits.

According to Andy Ridout, Managing Director of railway recruitment company Advance-TRS, the employment of long-term, permanent staff should definitely be encouraged;
“Creating long-term and reliable employment will not only save rail organisations themselves money on short- term contract hires but will have a holistic benefit for the whole industry through the investment in staff training. Training will ensure that younger workers are given the opportunity to provide an in-depth, knowledgeable service, comparable with that of the facility provided by their more experienced counterparts.” Andy went on to say, “With an ageing workforce this kind of employee investment is imperative.”

Advance-TRS offer their clients extensive training in candidate attraction, staff retention and maximum employee utilisation.

This Christmas whilst sat around the table with your family spare a thought for the Signalling Testers who will be working hard to ensure that plans to update the British railways are delivered on time, reports Victoria Turner of Advance-TRS.

Unfortunately every year, during the Christmas period, the rail industry faces a challenge mustering enough Signal Testers prepared to work the holidays. According to Andy Ridout, Managing Director of the specialist railway recruitment company Advance-TRS, this year is no exception.

With train operating companies eager to limit the disruption caused to travellers during peak times it is essential that scheduled commissionings are completed promptly over the festive season.

Says Andy, ‘Failure to deliver major commissioning work within the designated time frame could cause major interference to services. As a result, smaller projects could be cancelled and staff transferred to priority areas. For some, the Christmas bonus incentive is not enough to justify missing out on family festivities.’

According to Advance-TRS, one solution could be to consider using Functional Testers who are under mentorship for their IRSE licence. This would provide work experience and log book building whilst taking them one step closer to qualification and perhaps eradicating future staff shortages.

Another option is to outsource. James Sneller, signalling specialist at Advance-TRS believes that international workers could be the way forward. Says James, ‘Many foreign testers who already have UK experience and track certificates would find the offered rates highly appealing. All it would need is an agreement with Network Rail to approve a Certificate of Competence (CoC) prior to the work period.’

Advance-TRS is an international recruitment company, specialising in sourcing highly skilled, scarce railway candidates. For more information or to discuss your requirements with our team of industry experts call 01483 361 061.

Smart personnel are the most important element of any company. Staff represent their firm at every level and are often the face, image and brand of the business. So if employers go to all the trouble of putting time and money into selecting the most desirable candidates, it makes sense to retain them.

Investing in long-term training programmes keeps staff motivated and loyal. Better still it creates a thriving working environment that fosters the highly skilled, market leading, professionals who will take the company right to the top.

Yet in some sectors 43% of employees complain of lacking opportunity for growth, their potential remains unrealised. Increasing your staff’s skill base and job satisfaction through training makes economic as well as a professional sense. Poor customer service can damage reputation but can be put right through consistent and accessible training.

Says Andy Ridout, Managing Director of advance-Training and Recruitment (Services) Ltd, ‘At advance-TRS our training experts have developed talent retention strategies that maximise employee productivity through boosting morale and helping employees to enjoy and get the most from their jobs, thus decreasing staff turnover. This is an investment which no business can afford to be without.’

Training specialist Monique Choudhuri (Pictured), head of staff development at advance-TRS has built up a 25 year portfolio of blue chip clients including British Airways, BSkyB and Fircroft Engineering through training with a touch of humour.

‘The secret to successful training is to capture attention,’ says Monique. ‘I could tell my audience the meaning of life, but if no one is alert and paying attention it won’t go in. Delivery is the key. Teaching with a touch of wit ensures that my message is heard loud and clear.’

Monique bases her techniques on the idea that the human attention span is often quite short. Training sessions must therefore be broken up into bite-sized segments that reflect this.
‘I captivate my students with short group participation exercises, activities and games. This stimulates them and gets their thoughts flowing. The information will then be absorbed by their long-term memory,’ says Monique. ‘I work on the ‘remember and apply’ model. I use Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) to ensure that everything I teach will be remembered and applied practically in the workplace,’ she adds.

Advance-Training and Recruitment Services offers staff training at all levels, to clients throughout the railway industry, with the aim of finding you the right personnel and making sure you keep them.

Andy Ridout, Managing Director of Advance-TRS, has begun his training to compete in the Horseman Xtreme Triathlon in Dartmoor next September – all because of a celebration.

Andy has previously competed in the London Marathon and the Barcelona Triathlon. Says Ridout, 40, ‘My team and I were celebrating our 100th placement – we started this business just over a year ago.’ From a standing start in 2010 the new company, Advance–TRS, now supplies top quality professionals across the railway industry. ‘We were talking about growing the business and feeling pretty confident about it,’ says Andy, ‘I found myself thinking out loud about a parallel physical challenge to sit alongside expanding the company.’

The idea of the Horseman Xtreme had come to him some time ago. The race starts by jumping into the icy waters, competitors then swim 2.4 miles to the start of the cycle race, enduring 112 miles of harsh gradients. After that comes a gruelling 26.2-mile multi terrain run.

Through taking part Ridout plans to raise £10,000 for a charity very close to his heart, the Railway Children.

Andy commented, ‘In India 11 million children live on the streets and in the UK 100,000 run away from home every year, often as a result of sexual abuse, neglect and violence. As a father of three, I find this both shocking and distressing and am committed to generating as much money and awareness as physically possible to help the situation. After all, what if these were my children?’ Over the coming twelve months Andy plans to visit children in the UK and India who will hopefully benefit from his campaign.

The Horseman Xtreme is thought to be one of the toughest challenges yet devised. Already Andy is hard at work building up a core base of stamina and muscle ahead of distance endurance training next year.

‘I run to work l daily routine is a 6K cycle, 5K swim and 7K run to work.’ He commented. I did the London Marathon and really enjoyed it. That’s what drew me to triathlons. Barcelona was great but Dartmoor will be a totally different experience. At first I put the idea to the back of my mind but it shaped up as a challenge and I knew I had to do it.’

Says Paul Merton, Operations Director at Advance–TRS, ‘Anyone who knows Andy understands that he is not one to shy away from a challenge. When he sets himself a target it will be completed. £10,000 is a lot of money, but if anyone can do it, it will be Andy Ridout, I’m confident.’

To launch the fundraising campaign Ridout has been asked to speak at 2012’s Dinner at the Roundhouse on the 11th October and is currently auctioning logo advertising space across his running vest and cycle jersey – see above* To join the fun and support the cause you can secure your company logo space by contacting Andy directly on 01483 361061 or ar@advance-trs.com. Andy Ridout, Managing Director of niche railway recruitment company, Advance-TRS has been recognised for his services to recruitment through a nomination for RailStaff’s Recruiter of the Year awards.

Chris Darlow, Operations Director at Rail – Kelly Integrated Transport Services Ltd commented;

“It is with great pleasure that I nominate Andy Ridout for the recruiter of the year award 2012. I have known Andy for a long time and have no doubt that his commitment and dedication to the rail industry over his 16-year long career has been second to none.”

Andy started out as a young Trainee Recruitment consultant to a large agency; there, he quickly worked his way up to Director Level where he specialised in Signalling and remained the company’s top consultant for over fourteen years.

After countless recruitment campaigns for the majority of the UK’s rail organisations, Andy finally took the big decision to set up his own international railway recruitment firm and in August 2011 launched Advance-TRS.

After twelve months, a colossal amount of hard work and very long hours, Advance-TRS are now recognised as experts in supplying the complete range of permanent and contract, blue and white collar staff throughout the industry and have grown from a two man band to employing twelve full-time members of staff, this in the midst of a recession that has impacted the entire globe.

Despite a very hectic work schedule, Andy enjoys nothing more than spending time with his partner and three children who are the inspiration for his latest campaign; in August next year Andy will be attempting Dartmoor’s ‘Xtreme  Ironman’, in the hope of raise £10,000 for Railway Children. The amazing cause is very close to Andy’s heart and supports over 11 million children who are homeless and abused throughout the UK, India and East Africa. To raise as much awareness as possible, Andy is planning on attending various rail seminars, exhibitions and events throughout the UK and overseas over the coming months.

‘Over the past five years I have worked closely with Andy on many staffing projects and can only praise his conduct, attention to detail honesty and integrity,’ Chris Darlow went on to say. ‘He is someone who always goes out of his way to make himself available to anyone in need of his help or advice, a quality that he clearly expresses to his team and accounts for their outstanding performance. Andy Ridout, Managing Director of Advance Training and Recruitment Ltd is hard at work training for the Horseman Ironman competition.

Andy is dedicating his efforts to the charity Railway Children. As a father of three, he aims to raise £10,000 through sponsorship. Says Andy, ‘Everyday thousands of homeless children put themselves at risk through desperation to survive on railway lines around the world. There is nothing more precious in this world than children and I hope that my efforts can make more people aware of this fantastic cause.’

Andy Ridout has welcomed the news of Network Rail’s recent agreement to create a fair pay charter. Andy, who recruits permanent and contract staff throughout the railway sector commented, ‘It is a great and positive step for the industry which will have a hugely beneficial effect on the entire supply chain.’ He went on to say, ‘I hope that small and medium enterprises adopt a similar attitude in order to sustain the fluidity of the payment structure throughout the industry. The agreement sets to open new doors for the rail sector. By reducing the risk involved in investment, smaller business will be encouraged to invest in the industry, thus adding greater competition and improving on costs.’

Advance-TRS offers discounted introductory fees in return for shorter payment terms. The new charter will hopefully pave the way for the larger contractors to take advantage of this offer, giving them the opportunity to invest even more heavily in areas such as safety.

Paul Merton has joined specialist rail recruitment company advance-TRS as Operations Director, to work with close friend and former colleague Andy Ridout.

Paul has 12 years experience in mechanical, electrical and rail telecommunications recruitment.

He previously worked as a Business Consultant at Maple Resourcing Ltd and has worked for Resourcing Solutions and Marks and Spencer.

Says Paul, ‘It’s really inspiring to see what Advance has achieved in its first six months and I’m thrilled at the opportunity to continue building a professional and trusted recruitment consultancy. The chance to work with Andy is also what attracted me to Advance.

‘Anyone who has met Andy will know how passionate he is about recruitment and the rail industry.’

Says Andy Ridout, ‘Paul is a very welcome addition to the team. Aside from being a good friend, he brings a wealth of experience and industry knowledge.

‘We share the belief that customers want to speak to real industry experts. That way, clients can be confident we understand their requirements and candidates can be assured we will find a role that’s right for them.’

Andy Ridout has launched Advance Training and Recruitment Services, a Link Up approved recruitment company specialising in railway engineering and construction.

The move marks the high point of Andy’s fifteen-year career in the industry, including ten years as Director for a leading rail recruitment company.

He is now using his wealth of experience to place candidates into Engineering, Management and project Services roles, both contract and permanent, across all major rail disciplines.

Andy said: “I’ve always loved working in rail recruitment. I enjoy dealing with candidates directly and have developed an in-depth market knowledge, I believe an applicant’s chances of success increase dramatically if their recruiter has extensive experience and a thorough understanding of the industry.”

Andy went on to say; “At Advance-TRS our knowledge and experience isn’t promoted up and out of the candidate’s reach, but right on the front line where it’s needed most.”

The philosophy is proving a success, with the company having placed over 30 candidates into permanent positions in its first ten weeks and appearing on the preferred supply lists of seven respected rail organisations.

“We’re already seeing some cracking results,” added Andy.

“We’re looking forward to continuing our success into the New Year by growing our team and getting more candidates into the jobs they deserve.”

Andy believes, despite the nation’s gloomy employment figures, that 2012 will be an exciting year for those working in the rail industry.

“There are some huge projects coming up, including the MAFA frameworks, London Underground’s SSR project and Network Rail’s centralisation to Milton Keynes, not to mention the Olympics, these will create a host of new opportunities. The upshot is, if you’re getting bored and starting to wonder what else is out there, now could be the perfect time to do something about it.”

Starting a new company may seem like a brave move, but then Andy has never been one to shy away from a challenge.

As well as having run five marathons since 2003, Andy completed the Barcelona Ironman race in 2009 and has now begun training for an exceptionally tough challenge; The Horseman Ironman, in 2013.

Andy is inviting anyone to get in touch and find out what Advance-TRS can offer. For information on Advance-TRS services or to discuss your requirements call 01483 361 061 or email info@advance-trs.com
